StoneCrabs Theatre is a contemporary theatre company that creates distinctive performance experiences and champions new and international stories through physicality, powerful language, and striking imagery. The organization focuses on three interconnected strands: year-round theatre productions, engagement and participation projects with young people and diverse communities, and development initiatives such as training programmes for emerging theatre-makers. Drawing on artists and writers from many cultures, StoneCrabs aims to deepen understanding of social diversity and create theatre that crosses borders, with a particular emphasis on new writing and translations. Registered in England and Wales and based in London and on the Isle of Wight, StoneCrabs has built a strong portfolio of work across the UK and internationally, while maintaining meaningful community work that addresses social health and integration issues.
Role Description
The Chair of the Board of Trustees is a full-time, on-site leadership role based in Wherwell, providing strategic direction and governance oversight for StoneCrabs Theatre. The Chair leads Board meetings, sets agendas in collaboration with the Artistic Director and senior leadership, and ensures effective decision-making aligned with the charity’s mission and values.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Supporting and challenging the executive team

The Chair acts as an ambassador for the organization, cultivating relationships with stakeholders, funders, and partners, and helping to strengthen StoneCrabs’ profile and impact. The role also involves:
- Overseeing Board development
- Ensuring a diverse and skilled trustee body
- Fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture across the organization
Qualifications
- Experience working with charities and non-profit organizations, including an understanding of charity structures and stakeholder environments.
- Strong finance and business planning skills, with the ability to interpret financial reports, oversee budgets, and support sustainable growth.
- Proven strategic and organizational planning capabilities, including experience in long-term strategic planning and evaluating organizational performance.
- Solid knowledge of corporate governance and regulatory compliance, ideally with prior trustee or board-level experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, with excellent communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills across diverse communities.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and an understanding of the arts and cultural sector; experience in theatre or creative industries is advantageous.
- Ability to work on-site in Wherwell and dedicate sufficient time to Board responsibilities, meetings, and representation duties.
