Organisation Description
The Meadowside Charity Newton Abbot & District is a small, local charity which supports adults with learning disabilities and older people.
Meadowside provides 24-hour permanent residential care for 11 adults with learning disabilities and older people, many of whom also have physical disabilities and complex care requirements. Many residents have lived at the home for over 30 years and they all live together as a family, in a fun, happy and caring environment. There are also ‘members’ of the charity, who either live with relatives in the Teignbridge area or in sheltered housing in the town. They can use Meadowside as a ‘safe’ house and come along to various social events that are held throughout the year, including the Christmas party.
The home is a very happy place, with the residents being well looked after by the kind and friendly staff. It is important that the residents live their lives to the fullest, are given support to follow their dreams, visit the places they love and are accepted by the local community.

There is also a separate day-care centre in the grounds of Meadowside, currently open 5 days per week for any adults who require some kind of care.
Role Description
The Chairperson will:
- Lead the Board of trustees and ensure effective governance of the charity
- Ensure the Board functions as a unit and delivers its agreed objectives
- Support the Manager of Meadowside residential home and ensure the residents are well looked after, in line with legislation and Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements
- Have responsibility for the correct running of the residential home and act as Nominated Individual with the CQC
- Act as ambassador of the charity
There is no remuneration for the role, but relevant expenses may be claimed.
Key Responsibilities
- Hold regular and effective Board meetings and an annual AGM
- Ensure the Board fulfils its charitable objectives
- Ensure effective governance arrangements are in place
- Ensure systems are in place to manage and mitigate risks
- Ensure financial sustainability through accountability and regular reporting
- Ensure trustees have knowledge of their roles and responsibilities, are engaged and are able to develop their skills if necessary
- Ensure the Board has the right mix of relevant skills and a collaborative approach
- Recruit new trustees when necessary
- Ensure relevant policies are in place, both for the charity and the residential home
- Hold regular meetings with the Registered Manager and Deputy Manager
- Line manage and provide support to the Registered Manager and ensure professional development is available
- Hold annual appraisals for the Registered Manager
- Ensure the correct number of staff are employed to look after the residents effectively
- Carry out independent investigations, when necessary, as required by the CQC or commissioning authorities
- Delegation of roles to appropriate trustees or management
