Company Description
Woking & Sam Beare Hospice and Wellbeing Care is a patient-centered charity providing expert palliative and end-of-life care to adults with advanced life-limiting conditions across six Surrey boroughs, serving a population of over 360,000. Each year, the hospice supports around 2,000 patients, delivering care within the hospice, at the Bradbury Wellbeing Centre, and predominantly in the community in patient homes, care homes, and nursing homes. The organization is committed to enabling patient choice and promoting the best possible quality of life for patients, their families, and carers. All services are provided free of charge, and the charity relies heavily on voluntary income, raising most of its running costs through fundraising, donations, and the income from 18 retail shops. With strong community support, Woking & Sam Beare Hospice remains focused on delivering compassionate, high-quality care to those who need it most.
Role Description
The Chairperson is a full-time, remote role providing strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees and supporting the Chief Executive and senior leadership team in fulfilling the charity’s mission. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Chairing Board and committee meetings
- Setting agendas in collaboration with the Chief Executive
- Ensuring effective governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance

The Chairperson will work closely with trustees and executives to:
- Develop and monitor the strategic plan
- Oversee performance
- Safeguard the hospice’s financial sustainability
This role also involves:
- Acting as an ambassador for the organization
- Nurturing relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders
- Promoting the hospice’s values and services
The Chairperson is expected to:
- Foster an inclusive, transparent, and accountable culture
- Support high-quality decision-making across the organization
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in board or senior leadership roles, with strong governance, strategic planning, and risk management skills.
- Proven ability to provide clear, balanced leadership, including meeting facilitation, consensus-building, and decision-making in complex environments.
- Strong financial literacy, including understanding of budgets, charity funding models, and financial oversight responsibilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders, including trustees, executives, staff, volunteers, and donors.
- Experience in the charity, health, social care, or community sector, and a strong commitment to palliative and end-of-life care principles.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote setting, using digital tools for collaboration, documentation, and meetings.
- High ethical standards, sound judgment, and a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in organizational practice.
