Chair – WaterSafe
Championing Qualified Plumbing Professionals
Part-time | ~8 days/year | £2,900/year | Mostly remote
Are you a strategic leader with a passion for public health and good governance?
We’re seeking an Independent Chair to lead the board of an established not-for-profit organisation that maintains the UK’s national register of Approved Plumbers and Water Professionals. This vital service helps consumers and businesses find the nearest qualified contractor to help keep water supplies safe in homes and businesses.
Company Description
WaterSafe is a free, UK-wide online search directory funded by the water industry to help customers find approved, qualified plumbers in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. As a national accreditation body, WaterSafe checks and approves plumbing businesses and their plumbers to ensure they are properly qualified to keep drinking water safe and healthy. The scheme focuses on preventing contamination from poor plumbing practices or sub-standard products by requiring specific training in Water Fittings Regulations and Byelaws. WaterSafe is backed by all UK water companies, drinking water quality regulators, and NHS guidance, which recommends using WaterSafe-approved plumbers. Customers can easily find local approved plumbers through our directory.

About the Role
As Chair, you’ll lead a board of directors drawn from across the water and plumbing industry. Your leadership will help shape strategy, uphold standards, and ensure the organisation delivers on its mission to protect public health by helping consumers choose qualified installers, who have specific training to meet strict legal requirements.
You’ll act as a key ambassador for the organisation, bringing independent oversight, strategic direction, and support to a small but impactful operation to grow its influence and deliver its mission.
What You’ll Bring
- Proven board-level leadership experience, ideally as Chair or Non-Executive Director, with strong governance and strategic planning skills.
- Background in regulated industries, public health, water services, or accreditation schemes, with a solid understanding of compliance and risk management.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and negotiation skills, with the ability to build consensus and maintain constructive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to provide oversight while enabling an executive team to operate effectively and autonomously.
- High level of integrity, independence of judgment, and commitment to safeguarding public health and customer confidence.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement, including government bodies, regulators, industry partners, and consumer organisations.
- Familiarity with UK corporate governance principles and best practice in board operations.
- Relevant professional qualifications or equivalent experience in leadership, governance, law, public policy, business management, or a related field.
- Strong leadership, communication, and governance skills
- A collaborative and inclusive style, with the confidence to challenge constructively

Commitment
- Minimum of 8 days per year (mostly virtual meetings)
Remuneration
- £2,900 per annum
