About us
At Macmillan Cancer Support, we believe that no one should face cancer alone. Every day, we work to support people living with cancer, and we’re looking for talented people who want to help us make an even greater difference.
As a Challenge Events Manager you’ll play a vital role in helping us maximise the fundraising potential of a portfolio of third-party events. You’ll bring together marketing, supporter stewardship, event delivery and commercial thinking to create brilliant experiences that inspire people to take part, fundraise and stay connected to Macmillan.
This is a varied role where no two days will be the same. From developing insight-led paid social and email campaigns, to overseeing supporter communications and managing the logistics of event days, you’ll have the opportunity to influence the entire participant journey and make a tangible difference to the income we generate to support people living with cancer.
What you'll do
You’ll take the lead on the delivery and optimisation of a defined portfolio of third-party events, from runs to cycles, ensuring our logistics and marketing and stewardship activity is engaging, effective and delivered to a high standard.
You’ll:
- Lead multi-channel marketing campaigns, with a particular focus on paid social and email, to drive registrations and achieve campaign targets.
- Plan and deliver end-to-end stewardship campaigns, creating engaging, insight-driven communications that motivate participants and maximise fundraising.
- Manage significant budgets, with responsibility for income budgets of up to £2 million and expenditure budgets of up to £500,000. You’ll monitor performance, manage spend, forecast effectively and identify and escalate risks.
- Lead event planning and logistics, ensuring our presence at events delivers a brilliant experience for participants, volunteers and colleagues. This will include developing detailed event plans and risk assessments, coordinating briefings and ensuring all relevant health and safety requirements are met.
- Manage external suppliers, event organisers and agencies, ensuring they deliver against agreed briefs, timescales and performance standards.
- Manage and inspire one Challenge Events Assistant to a high level of performance, adhering to line management processes and overseeing development.
- Build strong relationships across Macmillan, working collaboratively with teams including Volunteering, Digital Content, Email, Compliance and Supporter Care.
- Use data and insight to improve performance, identifying opportunities to optimise campaigns, improve supporter experiences and maximise income.
- Represent Macmillan at events, which may include weekend working, travelling and spending time away from home. You’ll also support the management of staff and groups of volunteers and, when required, help with practical event preparation such as packing equipment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
