Role Description

The post holder will support the management of ward/unit and will deputise for the Ward/Unit Manager as required. S/he will carry out allocated duties at the direction of the Ward/Unit Manager and provide clinical supervision and support to an identified staff group. S/he will regularly take charge of the ward and manage the team in the absence of the Ward Manager. The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team framework in the delivery of care to patients within the intensive care setting.

S/he will act as a primary/associate nurse for a group of patients, assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating care. As a primary/associate nurse, the post holder will promote person-centred care and ensure that all care plans reflect this approach. S/he will also be expected to teach and supervise others including newly qualified and unqualified staff.

  • Manages the ward on a day-to-day basis at the direction of the Ward Manager and deputises in the Ward Manager's absence.
  • Co-operates with the Ward Manager to ensure that junior staff participate in professional development programmes and are supervised appropriately within their remit of competency.
  • Ensures the confidentiality of their work as outlined in the Trust's policy, the Data Protection Act, and NMC guidelines on professional conduct.
  • Ensures that junior staff understand the Trust’s policies regarding Health & Safety at Work.
  • Maintains an effective working knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983) and other related legal and statutory frameworks and subsequent revisions.
  • Understands, carries out, and educates others in the administrative requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • To participate in the duty nurse bleep holding rota.
  • When completing staff rotas, adopt the most effective use of the Health Roster staff rota system as instructed by the Ward/Unit Manager.
  • To support the Ward Manager in ensuring that KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) relating to ward efficiencies are maintained and when required initiate actions to address any shortfalls.
