Post Details
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Charge Nurse (Mental Health or Learning Disability) to join the nursing leadership team within our busy Admission and Assessment Ward at the State Hospital.
This is a key leadership role within a fast-paced and dynamic clinical environment that supports patients through assessment, admission, transition, and ongoing therapeutic intervention. The successful candidate will provide visible clinical and operational leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and person-centred care while maintaining the highest standards of professional nursing practice.
Working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the Charge Nurse will lead and support ward-based nursing staff, coordinate complex patient care, oversee risk management processes, and contribute to patient assessment, care planning, and recovery-focused interventions. The role requires excellent communication, decision-making, and organisational skills, alongside the ability to manage competing demands, respond effectively to changing clinical priorities, and maintain professional composure within a challenging and often high-pressure environment.
The post holder will work closely with the Senior Charge Nurse to support service delivery, workforce management, clinical governance, and continuous quality improvement initiatives, ensuring the ward remains responsive to the needs of patients while promoting a therapeutic, safe, and secure environment.
You will collaborate with Senior Charge Nurses to ensure high standards of patient care and support service development through Clinical Supervision and Reflective Practice. Previous management experience is advantageous, although training will be provided. Evidence of Leadership and Continuing Professional Development (e.g., ILM, Project Lift, QI training) is required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
