Charge Nurse – Deputy Ward Manager
Band 6 | Permanent
Full Time – 37.5 Hours per Week (Long Day Shift Model)
New CAMHS Inpatient Unit | Haywards Heath
£39,959 – £48,117 per annum + enhancements for evenings, nights, weekends & bank holidays

Who can apply
We’re looking for an experienced registered nurse with:
- Current professional registration appropriate to the role
- A professional nursing qualification, including Mental Health Nursing
- Post-registration experience relevant to the care group
- Experience working with children and young people in mental health settings
- Experience supporting people with severe mental health difficulties, particularly during acute periods
- Experience undertaking clinical and risk assessments
- Experience supervising and supporting colleagues
- Evidence of continuing professional development
You’ll need the confidence to take charge of a busy inpatient environment while maintaining a compassionate, trauma-informed and recovery-focused approach.

The role
As Charge Nurse / Deputy Ward Manager, you’ll provide senior clinical leadership on shift and support the Ward Manager with the day-to-day running of the unit.
You’ll:
- Undertake comprehensive mental health and risk assessments
- Act as named nurse and care coordinator for young people with complex needs
- Deliver and evaluate person-centred, trauma-informed nursing interventions
- Regularly take charge of the ward and coordinate safe care delivery
- Act as a senior clinical decision-maker during shifts
- Support rota planning, staffing coordination and operational management
- Supervise, mentor and develop junior staff and students
- Contribute to care reviews and Mental Health Tribunals
- Work closely with young people, families and carers throughout admission and discharge
- Maintain high standards of safeguarding, documentation and clinical governance
- Contribute to audit, quality improvement and service development
About the new CAMHS inpatient unit
The Children and Young People’s Mental Health Inpatient Unit in Haywards Heath is reopening in Autumn 2026 following significant investment and extensive co-design with young people, families and staff. The refreshed model includes:
- Purposeful admissions with clear therapeutic goals
- Structured care and early review points
- A seven-day therapeutic programme, including evenings and weekends
- Strong integration with COAST (Crisis Outreach Acute Support Team)
- Enhanced multidisciplinary working
- Recovery-focused, trauma-informed care
The service supports young people experiencing acute and complex mental health difficulties.
What we’re looking for
You’ll be someone who can:
- Provide calm and confident leadership during challenging clinical situations
- Assess and respond appropriately to changing levels of clinical risk
- Coordinate the work of others within a busy ward environment
- Build strong professional relationships across the multidisciplinary team
- Communicate sensitively about difficult and complex issues
- Manage conflict and negotiate effectively
- Support and motivate junior colleagues
- Work collaboratively with families, carers and partner agencies
- Demonstrate strong organisation and prioritisation skills
- Champion safe, compassionate and high-quality inpatient care

You’ll also need to be able to undertake the physical requirements of the role, including PMVA, manual handling and administering IM medication where required.
