Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Chargehand Mechanical Fitter to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
Role Purpose
The Chargehand Mechanical Fitter is responsible for leading and coordinating a team of Mechanical Fitters carrying out preservation, installation, maintenance and pre-commissioning activities on mechanical equipment.
The role combines hands-on mechanical fitting duties with responsibility for:
- Allocating work
- Supervising operatives
- Monitoring productivity
- Ensuring activities are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project procedures, engineering standards and quality requirements.
The Chargehand will act as the first point of contact for the workforce and will work closely with Supervisors, Engineering, Construction, Quality and Commissioning teams.
What you'll be doing
Leadership & Supervision
- Lead, coordinate and provide day-to-day direction to Mechanical Fitters and associated operatives.
- Allocate work activities and ensure the team understands priorities, scope and quality expectations.
- Conduct daily briefings, toolbox talks and task-specific discussions.
- Monitor attendance, performance and conduct, escalating concerns where required.
- Support the development, mentoring and assessment of apprentices, trainees and less experienced personnel.
- Promote effective communication, teamwork and a positive working culture.
- Coordinate activities with other disciplines to minimise disruption and ensure efficient delivery.
Mechanical & Preservation Activities
- Carry out mechanical fitting & preservation activities as required.
- Coordinate preservation of mechanical equipment, including pumps, turbines, compressors, valves, piping systems and rotating equipment.
- Ensure preservation techniques are correctly applied, including lubrication, protective coatings, vapour phase inhibitors, grease packing, nitrogen blanketing and wrapping/sealing methods.
- Support installation, alignment, maintenance and pre-commissioning activities.
- Coordinate flushing, drying, cleanliness inspections and equipment rotation activities.
- Inspect equipment to identify corrosion, damage, deterioration or other defects.
- Ensure appropriate environmental and storage conditions are maintained, including temperature, humidity and protection controls.

Quality & Performance
- Monitor work quality and progress to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, procedures, method statements and manufacturer requirements.
- Ensure preservation records, inspection reports and documentation are completed accurately and maintained in line with project requirements.
- Liaise with QA/QC personnel to arrange inspections and resolve quality issues.
- Identify and escalate defects, delays, resource constraints and non-conformances.
- Ensure teams have the required materials, tools, equipment and information to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Monitor materials and equipment usage and report shortages or defects.
Health, Safety & Environment
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with site rules, permits, risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Verify that personnel have the appropriate training, competence, authorisations and PPE for their activities.
- Ensure the safe handling, storage and use of chemicals, lubricants and preservation materials.
- Stop work where activities cannot be carried out safely or in accordance with approved controls.
- Support behavioural safety initiatives, toolbox talks and site safety campaigns.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and ensure environmental controls, waste management and spill prevention measures are followed.
Key Requirements
- Proven experience in mechanical fitting, preservation or maintenance within construction, industrial, energy, oil & gas or similar sectors.
- Previous experience leading or supervising mechanical teams.
- Good understanding of mechanical preservation techniques & industry best practices.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and work procedures.
- Strong commitment to health, safety, quality & environmental standards.
- Effective communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Relevant mechanical trade qualifications and site safety certifications preferred.
Who we're looking for
- Relevant mechanical engineering or fitting qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent)
- CSCS card or relevant trade certification (site dependent)
- HSE certifications (e.g., safety passport) preferred
- Additional certifications (e.g., confined space, working at height) are advantageous
Skills And Experience
- Significant experience as a Mechanical Fitter within construction, oil and gas, power generation, nuclear, petrochemical or other heavy industrial environments.
- Previous experience leading, coordinating or supervising a mechanical workforce.
- Strong practical knowledge of mechanical installation, maintenance and preservation activities.
- Knowledge of preservation techniques including oil flushing, nitrogen blanketing, lubrication, grease packing, protective coatings and environmenta
