Job Title: Chartered Structural Engineer
About the Role
Tunnel Engineering Limited is seeking a Chartered Structural Engineer to undertake structural design, assessment, and temporary works consultancy, alongside delivering CITB temporary works courses. This role offers the opportunity to remain actively involved in engineering projects while sharing your knowledge and practical experience with construction professionals.
You do not need to be an approved CITB trainer when you join. We will provide training and support with the application to become approved to deliver the CITB Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) and Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) courses.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Undertake structural analysis and design for permanent and temporary works.
- Assess existing structures, considering their condition, loading, structural capacity, and suitability for continued or proposed use.
- Carry out site visits, structural inspections, and condition surveys, and identify requirements for further investigation or testing.
- Prepare calculations, design reports, assessment reports, specifications, and clear recommendations.
- Develop practical repair, strengthening, and remedial solutions where required.
- Prepare design briefs and coordinate drawings and technical information with colleagues and external parties.
- Undertake technical reviews and design checks within your competence and the company’s checking procedures.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and other designers to deliver coordinated, buildable solutions.
- Manage allocated projects and deliverables against agreed scopes, programmes, and budgets.
- Deliver CITB TWC and TWS courses (usually online or in a classroom) when needed.

Essential Requirements
- Chartered Engineer status and membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers: CEng MIStructE or FIStructE.
- Proven experience in structural design and assessment, with the ability to take ownership of engineering deliverables.
- Relevant temporary works design experience and a practical understanding of construction activities.
- Sound knowledge of structural behaviour, engineering principles, and relevant design standards.
- Experience preparing clear calculations, technical reports, and engineering recommendations.
- Proficiency in appropriate structural analysis and design software.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical matters clearly.
- A positive commitment to teaching temporary works courses alongside consultancy duties.
- Willingness to complete the necessary trainer development and approval process.
- Ability to organize workloads and balance project deadlines with scheduled training commitments.
