This is an opportunity to work alongside Chartered Building Surveyors, Building Engineers, graduates and other property professionals across a varied portfolio of residential, commercial and historic buildings, while playing a key role in developing the structural engineering capability of the practice.
The position would suit a Chartered Engineer who enjoys the variety of existing buildings, investigation and refurbishment work, and who wants the opportunity to help shape and grow a structural engineering team in the future.
The Role
You will provide structural engineering expertise across projects ranging from residential property investigations through to commercial buildings, historic structures, refurbishment and alteration projects. Projects will include:
- Structural inspections and defect investigations
- Assessment of cracking, movement and structural defects
- Structural input into pre-acquisition surveys
- Residential, commercial and historic building investigations
- Refurbishment and alteration projects
- Structural appraisal of existing buildings
- Assessment of walls, floors, roofs, foundations and structural frames
- Structural design for alterations, openings and modifications
- Extensions and refurbishment schemes
- Structural calculations, drawings and specifications
- Advice relating to traditional and historic construction
- Working alongside Chartered Building Surveyors on complex building pathology cases
- Supporting feasibility and early-stage design work
- Liaising with clients, architects, contractors and other consultants
- Supporting graduates and less experienced members of the wider technical team
The work will involve both site-based investigation and design, providing an opportunity to follow projects from initial inspection and diagnosis through to engineering solutions and implementation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
