The Opportunity:

Together we can do great things. Be part of something bigger.

The University isn’t just any employer. We are part of a local community and a contributor to global thinking, progress and research. In Edinburgh, you are in one of the world’s most attractive cities with active arts and social sectors, while working in a University that has made significant contributions to society, medicine, physics and teaching for over four centuries. Our people have helped create the modern world and are working on more ground-breaking technologies and practices.

From student accommodation to café’s restaurants and hotels, we are a 24/7 organisation that embraces the traditional and the modern in equal measure. From historical buildings to state of the art technical and research hubs our mission is to ‘enrich student learning and growth as well as impact our local communities’ and our values drive everything we do.

We are looking for a Chef De Partie to be part of our team at Canopy Kitchen & Courtyard, based at the iconic Edinburgh Futures Institute, in the heart of the Meadows. Canopy provides a busy Grab & Go style cafe service, where all the products are made fresh daily in house. A 70-cover restaurant serving up brunch 6 days per week and dinner 3 days per week, focusing on seasonal, Scottish ingredients, whilst we also provide delivered hospitality and event catering to the clients in the building. This is a complex and fast paced operation making it an excellent opportunity for a CDP or an experienced Commis Chef looking to take the next step in their culinary career.

Reporting to the Sous Chef, you will support the day-to-day running of the kitchen, managing your sections independently, preparing excellent quality food to company standards and contributing to the coaching of commis chefs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring that all dishes are prepared, cooked and presented in line with recipes, specifications and food safety standards while maintaining consistently high levels of quality.
  • Helping maintain a clean, organised and efficient kitchen environment.
  • Working collaboratively with front of house colleagues to deliver an excellent customer experience.
  • Working busy service periods to ensure food is delivered on time and to the required standard.
  • Taking responsibility for kitchen operations in the absence of the Sous Chef or Junior Sous Chef.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
