Reach for Remarkable: Chef Supervisor (HMP Birmingham)

To be eligible for this secure prison environment role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have lived in the UK continually for the past five years
  • Hold the legal right to work in the UK
  • Successfully complete full security vetting and Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks

This position involves working directly with offenders in a prison catering kitchen while supervising a multi-disciplinary team, including enhanced inmates. Responsibilities will include:

About the Role

Aramark UK are seeking a Chef Supervisor to manage the day-to-day operations of a secure prison kitchen at HMP Birmingham (Winson Green, B18 4AS).

Successfully appointed candidates will:

  • Oversee kitchen operations, ensuring efficiency, cleanliness, and quality standards
  • Work closely with enhanced inmates alongside a culinary team
  • Maintain stock control, food safety, and workplace standards
  • Complete all regulatory paperwork and compliance checks
  • Foster a positive working environment and resolve conflict where needed

Key Responsibilities

A typical day includes:

  • Supervising inmate chefs in meal preparation, following a fixed menu
  • Ensuring high-quality, safe, and compliant meals 3x daily
  • Maintaining kitchen cleanliness, hygiene standards, and stock control
  • Filling in all mandatory risk assessments, training logs, and operational docs
  • Team collaboration with professional chefs and offenders
  • Conflict resolution in a secure environment

Person Specification

You’ll thrive here if you tick the following boxes:

✅ Experience & Skills

  • Supervisory experience (preferably within catering)
  • Minimum relevant culinary qualifications (e.g. NVQ Level 2/3 in Food, Kitchens, or Hospitality)
  • Experience managing large-scale kitchen environments
  • Ability to work in a secure setting with enhanced inmates
