About The Role
As a Chef/Cook, we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to join our in-house Catering team at Merrist Wood College. You will prepare and cook fresh food from scratch to a high standard for students, staff, and visitors, while supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of our kitchen and catering service.
Working alongside the Chef Manager, you will take responsibility for food preparation, cooking, food safety, and maintaining high standards across the kitchen. You will also supervise and support staff and students and, when required, take responsibility for the kitchen as the duty chef in the Chef Manager's absence.
This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced chef or cook who enjoys preparing food from fresh ingredients and has experience working in a professional or commercial kitchen. We would welcome applications from candidates who have worked in roles such as Chef, Cook, Catering Chef, Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, School Chef, College Chef, or similar professional kitchen roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook fresh food from scratch to a consistently high standard, ensuring meals are produced on time and presented to the required quality.
- Support the day-to-day running of the kitchen, including supervising staff and students and taking responsibility as duty chef when required.
- Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene, and health & safety, including allergen management and completion of relevant records and checks.
- Support kitchen management, including food ordering, stock control, menu planning, portion control, and effective use of the catering budget.
- Work collaboratively with the Chef Manager and Catering team to deliver a consistent food and hospitality offer and support College events and activities.
About You
An experienced and enthusiastic chef or cook who takes pride in preparing and cooking food from scratch using fresh ingredients. The successful candidate will have practical experience working in a professional or commercial kitchen, with the confidence to produce high-quality food consistently in a busy service environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
