Chemical Engineer for Nickel and Copper Recovery Project

I am looking for a chemical engineer to lead an urgent six-month project on the recovery of nickel and copper from industrial waste streams using a novel calcium silicate material. The work sits within a larger University of Strathclyde programme, funded by Scottish Enterprise, on the clean-up of industrial waste.

The core task is to design, build and commission a stirred-tank reactor demonstrator and test it with an industrial partner on real waste. Funding is already in place to commission the build, so the role takes a working design through to a tested unit rather than stopping at a specification.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What I'm Looking For:

  • A chemical engineering background, ideally at post-doctoral level, though relevant industrial process experience is highly desirable and equally welcome
  • Hands-on stirred-tank reactor design, commissioning and scale-up — CSTR / continuous experience a strong advantage together with solid–liquid separation
  • Someone who can move at pace: design, build and test inside six months
