Chemist (12-Month Maternity Cover)
Location: Taunton Salary: £30,000–£35,000 Contract: 12-Month Fixed-Term (Maternity Cover) Potential for Permanent Opportunity
We are supporting an established and growing manufacturing business in recruiting a Chemist to join their technical team on a 12-month maternity cover contract. This is an excellent opportunity for a scientifically qualified individual to develop their career in product development, laboratory testing, and technical support within a collaborative manufacturing environment. The role has genuine potential for conversion to a permanent position for the right candidate.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will play a key role in coordinating product trials, supporting research and development activities, and ensuring products meet quality and regulatory compliance. You will work across the entire product lifecycle—from concept to manufacture and launch—collaborating with technical, purchasing, sales, and marketing teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the R&D of new products and explore opportunities for product improvement.
- Coordinate production trials and laboratory testing, ensuring accurate documentation and records are maintained.
- Analyse trial data and prepare technical reports and presentations for senior management.
- Provide regulatory compliance support, including product registrations and technical documentation.
- Guide products through the development process, from concept to launch.
- Collaborate with the Purchasing team on raw material evaluations and testing.
- Assist Sales and Marketing teams with technical inquiries as needed.
- Maintain and update technical databases for raw materials and product information.
- Conduct quality control testing, prepare sample batches, and adhere to laboratory protocols.
- Ensure all laboratory activities comply with Health & Safety guidelines.
- Provide general technical support and work collaboratively to meet business objectives.
- Perform additional duties as required.

About You
- A degree in Chemistry or another relevant scientific discipline.
- A strong scientific background with an interest in product development and laboratory work.
- Excellent organisational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to analyse data and create clear technical reports and presentations.
- Confidence managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A proactive, initiative-driven approach with the ability to work independently.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- A collaborative, team-oriented mindset, with ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders.
