About the Opportunity

The Scientific Testing & Experimentation (ST&E) business at Amentum is recruiting for a Chemistry Consultant to be based in Birchwood, Warrington; the successful candidate would join a team of highly qualified scientists and engineers.

The Chemistry Consultant will have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects associated with the nuclear industry, from support to new reactor designs such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR), nuclear new build, existing generation, UK and International nuclear fusion, defence and nuclear regulatory support.

Our chemists provide both practical and theoretical support to projects across many aspects of the nuclear life cycle in both the civil and defence sectors, in the UK and worldwide. Your role could include providing analytical chemistry and radiochemistry support to our clients from our laboratories, commissioning and operating novel rigs to inform solutions to chemistry challenges faced by our clients or providing desk-based chemistry consultancy and regulatory support to support our clients across the nuclear life cycle.

We apply modern science in new and different ways; and help to develop new, cleaner, safer, or more efficient means of producing and harnessing nuclear energy to help combat climate change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading small project teams to deliver chemistry-based projects
  • Working within a large multi-disciplinary project team of engineers and scientists to deliver projects
  • Assisting in the development of innovative solutions to complex chemistry problems
  • Support to site-based customer activities
  • Support with the design, build, commissioning and operation of test rigs and facilities to answer chemistry related challenges
  • Variety of lab-based sample analysis and interpretation of experimental data, compilation of high-quality technical reports and discussion of results with customers
  • Carrying out desk-based consultancy and regulatory support to clients across the nuclear lifecycle
  • Support with the preparation of bid documentation

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or other similar scientific discipline, plus relevant chemistry experience
  • A good degree of self-motivation and ability to undertake a number of tasks in parallel
  • Excellent practical laboratory skills
  • The ability to work flexibly
  • Excellent communications skills both written and verbal
  • The ability to be able to work as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and questioning attitude
  • Candidates must have/or be able to obtain CTC clearance as a minimum
  • Either hold chartered status or have the ability to gain chartership (i.e., RSciTech/RSci/CChem/CSci) (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of the chemistry, materials and engineering issues associated with the nuclear sector (Desirable)
