About the Opportunity

The Scientific Testing & Experimentation (ST&E) business at Amentum is recruiting for a Chemistry Laboratory Technician to be based in Birchwood, Warrington; the successful candidate would join a team of highly qualified scientists and engineers.

As a Laboratory Technician, you will be supporting the laboratories and the consultants who work on a diverse range of projects associated with the nuclear industry. Your role will support the safe and effective delivery of laboratory activities through the preparation, processing and analysis of samples and the routine operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertaking routine sample preparation and laboratory activities in accordance with approved methods and procedures.
  • Operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation following appropriate training and authorisation.
  • Preparing chemicals, reagents, standards and laboratory materials.
  • Carrying out routine checks, calibrations and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Accurately recording laboratory activities, results and associated quality documentation.
  • Supporting analysts and technical staff with the delivery of client and project work.
  • Managing samples, including receipt, preparation, storage and disposal as required.
  • Maintaining laboratory stocks of chemicals, consumables and other materials.
  • Maintaining high standards of laboratory housekeeping, cleanliness and organisation.
  • Working in accordance with relevant EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) requirements, COSHH assessments and risk assessments.
  • Identifying equipment, safety or quality issues and escalating them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Supporting continuous improvement of laboratory processes and working practices.
  • Working collaboratively with other laboratory personnel to meet project priorities and delivery timescales.

The role requires good practical laboratory skills, attention to detail and a strong commitment to safety and quality. A relevant scientific or technical qualification would be desirable, although appropriate laboratory experience and competence may also be considered.

Here’s What You'll Need

  • A minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent). This should include maths, and English, plus at least 2 other science, technical or engineering subjects
  • A Level Chemistry at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • A talent for practical subjects and enjoy ‘hands on’ laboratory working
  • Eagerness to work and develop your career as a technician in the nuclear industry
  • Excellent communications skills
  • The ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge of QA/QC
  • High level of self-motivation and the ability to undertake a number of tasks in parallel
