Traffic Management Operative Trainee

Location: Old Oak Common, NW10 7ED

General hours of work: 47.5 hours per week with Working Pattern: Monday to Friday working one weekend a month on a rota overtime opportunity

Salary: up to £13.38- £14.74 ph depending on location, skills and experience with company benefits and overtime opportunity.

Job Purpose

The Trainee Traffic Management Operative will support the safe installation, maintenance, and removal of temporary traffic management systems across HS2 project sites. Working under the guidance of experienced Traffic Management Operatives and Supervisors, the trainee will learn industry best practices while helping to ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians, site personnel, and construction activities.

This role is ideal for individuals seeking to start a career within the traffic management and highways sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, adjustment, and removal of temporary traffic management equipment.
  • Support the setup of road signs, cones, barriers, temporary traffic signals, and diversion routes.
  • Conduct daily checks of traffic management layouts to ensure compliance with approved traffic management plans.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with HS2, company, and industry safety standards.
  • Follow all site-specific procedures, permits, and instructions from supervisors.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and transporting traffic management equipment and materials.
  • Monitor traffic flow and report any issues, incidents, or safety concerns promptly.
  • Ensure equipment is stored securely and maintained in good working condition.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and training programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with site teams, contractors, stakeholders, and members of the public.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability requirements associated with the HS2 project.
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the role as directed by management.

  • Adhere to all Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and company procedures.
  • Always wear and maintain appropriate PPE.
  • Report hazards, near misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Follow HS2's "Safe at Heart" safety culture and behavioural expectations.
  • Support environmental protection measures, including waste management and pollution prevention.
  • Demonstrate a proactive attitude towards safety and wellbeing.

Essential Requirements

  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to working safely at all times.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Physically fit and capable of manual handling activities.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional approach to work.
  • Full UK Driving Licence (preferred or willingness to achieve).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Lantra Traffic Management (T1/T2) qualification or willingness to obtain.

What Good Looks Like for a 12d or Unit 2 Traffic Management Operative Trainee:

  • Full driving licence, with no more than 6 points. Any driving bans must have been expired for at least 5 years
  • Able to pass a drug and alcohol test your offer will depend on the outcome of this
  • Positive “can-do” attitude
  • Adaptability and Flexibility
  • Meticulous attention to detail
