Chief Commercial Officer
Homebased (ad hoc travel within UK)
37.5 hours per week
£125,000 to £135,000 per annum

Our work matters because life matters, until the very end. For over 70 years, our specialist team has been working towards giving everyone the palliative and end-of-life care they deserve. And we're looking for a Chief Commercial Officer to help us get there.
This integral role is responsible for developing and delivering the charity’s commercial income strategy, ensuring sustainable growth in unrestricted net income while maintaining the organisation’s mission and values.
The Chief Commercial Officer will lead one of the UK’s largest charity retail operations alongside a portfolio of commercial activities, including the development of an emerging commercial training and consultancy business. They will identify and develop new sources of profitable, earned income, maximise the value of the charity’s assets and commercial capabilities, and create partnerships that strengthen financial sustainability and extend the charity’s reach.
The Chief Commercial Officer will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer.
You’ll be responsible for…
- Participating in major strategic decisions, working in close partnership with the Chief Income Generation & Marketing Officer, ensuring commercial and fundraising activities complement one another, maximising lifetime supporter value, presenting a coherent external narrative and strengthen the charity’s reputation.
- Leading on the development and implementation of the retail strategy for the Charity, which seeks to deliver sustainable growth in financial contribution, a supportive and welcoming environment for all colleagues and directly supports the charity’s objects.
- Leading on the growth of the shop portfolio, establishing a way forward to deliver a vibrant and profitable proposition.
- Leading and developing the retail team of paid colleagues and volunteers, creating and inclusive, collaborative and positive culture.
- Working closely with the CEO and other members of the ELT, to provide support and guidance for strategic decision making and day to day operations of the Charity.
- Leading the commercial development and monetisation of the charity's assets, including intellectual property and freehold property.
- Accountable for generation of significant financial contribution towards the provision of palliative, end-of-life and bereavement care through Retail, Ecommerce and Learning Academy.
- Accountable for more than £60M of income and £45M in expenditure.
- Accountable for leading Health and Safety across the entire charity and providing assurance to the Board.
- Leading the development and implementation of strategy for freehold and leasehold property.
- Accountable for leading wider team of around 1,200 paid and 8,000 volunteer colleagues.

The ideal candidate would be…
- An exceptional leader and manager with skills including the ability to inspire others, develop teams, drive performance management and continuous improvement.
- Able to evidence highly developed strategic, analytical and financial skills to help sustain and grow the business.
- Able to evidence an understanding of commercial property transaction processes.
- Entrepreneurial in mindset with strong team orientation including proven experience of delivery with decisiveness and accountability.
- Able to evidence significant experience of leading business-to-business partnership acquisition and development.
- Able to demonstrate strong analytical and commercial thinking with the ability to be innovative and solution focused.
- Able to devise innovative approaches to improving productivity.
- Able to deliver outcomes to the highest standard, demonstrating commitment and courage.
- Able to demonstrate political awareness with the ability to negotiate, manage conflict resolution.
- A strong, compelling and honest communicator with excellent written and oral skills.
- Able to evidence experience of influencing internal and external stakeholders including financial and investor institutions.
Minimum Essential criteria:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
- Significant proven experience in a senior leadership role within a complex organisation.
- In depth understanding and experience in a retail setting and of ecommerce management.
