Chief Engineer - Mechanical

An opportunity has arisen for a Chief Engineer - Mechanical to join the Engineering department.About the role Leads the development of Mechanical Engineering, optimising and integrating components and sub-systems within the Power system integrating the most efficient execution, while meeting cost and timing of the product programs.

Provides the “homeroom” for all Mechanical Engineers & PLM through an in-direct reporting structure leveraging extensive knowledge transfer, cross-program sharing of lessons learned and improved technical development through highly interactive sessions within their peer group.

Laser focus on a systems engineering approach that enables industry-leading quality execution, manufacturing capable designs, efficient serviceability solutions, on-time program execution leveraging NPCS for our product programs, and outstanding product safety performance for our customers.What you will do

Provides vision, technical guidance and final approval on highly integrated mechanical engineering solutions that support maximum part re-use with an architectural approach to drive maximum scale, manufacturability, product safety, profitability and quality execution of product designs. Provides expertise and guidance to ensure all mechanical designs highly leverage a systems engineering approach and utilize virtual tools to minimize physical tooling and cash outlay for Fortescue Zero. Provides technical leadership to integrate all mechanical components & sub-systems ensuring the power system is optimized for efficiency, cost, mass and quality to achieve program milestone timing, while working cross-functionally with all key internal and external stakeholders.  Drive innovative design thinking while leveraging all tools, methods and processes are updated as required to ensure industry-best product execution. Strengthen relationships with Gen X co-development suppliers (including FDB & Celestica) to ensure on-time program execution with quality. Develop and enforce “single point accountability” of all mechanical product components and mitigate sub-system failure modes at the power system level. Provide inspirational leadership to the Mechanical Engineering & PLM organisation, employee mentorship & career path development, and demand excellent cross-functional collaboration and knowledge transfer amongst all employees to enable long-term profitability and success at Fortescue Zero.  Set high expectations through coaching of Mechanical engineers & PLM employees to summarize highly technical information in a brief, simplified and succinct format which is tailored to the specific audience, avoiding excessive questioning and optimising time for everyone involved. Lead Mechanical Engineering Staff & HR meetings on a regular basis to monitor mechanical engineering issue resolution closure performance, resource balancing, program resource allocation and performance management discussions (in collaboration with Program Chief Engineers) to drive outstanding engineering execution. Support Chief Programme Engineers Leaders in resolving complex technical challenges through weekly technical reviews of Jira issues with the respective product systems engineering engineers to accelerate issue resolution. Recognised technical expert with deep knowledge of mechanical systems and systems engineering. Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. Expert in design for manufacturing and failure analysis. Proven ability to assure and guide multiple concurrent programmes. Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
