Chief Executive – Community Action Northumberland

Could you lead the next chapter of Community Action Northumberland?

Community Action Northumberland (CAN) is a rural charity working with people and communities across Northumberland.

We help communities tackle the issues that matter to them – from affordable warmth, housing and employment to community buildings, digital inclusion and the transition to cleaner energy. Our work combines practical support on the ground with partnership working, research and advocacy, helping us address immediate challenges while also influencing longer-term change for rural communities.

We are looking for a new Chief Executive to provide strategic and operational leadership for CAN, building on our achievements and strong reputation while helping to shape the organisation’s next chapter.

Working closely with our Board of Trustees and staff team, the Chief Executive will lead the development and delivery of CAN’s strategy, identify new opportunities and ensure the organisation remains effective, financially sustainable and responsive to the changing needs of rural communities.

The Chief Executive will also play an important external role, developing strong relationships with communities, partners, funders and decision-makers and ensuring CAN continues to provide a strong, independent voice for rural Northumberland.

About the role

The Chief Executive will have overall responsibility for the leadership, management and development of CAN.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
