Chief Financial Officer (CFO) - Great British Energy (GBE)

Vero Recruitment has been exclusively retained to appoint a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on behalf of Great British Energy (GBE), the UK’s publicly owned national energy company, headquartered in Aberdeen.

About Great British Energy:

Great British Energy has been created to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies and ensure taxpayers, bill payers, communities and the energy workforce share in the benefits of a clean and secure energy system. Its ambition is to become an enduring national institution and a developer, constructor and owner of homegrown energy – Clean. Secure. Yours.

GBE is now moving decisively from establishment into delivery. The 2025 Spending Review allocated GBE and GBE-Nuclear more than £8.3 billion towards their respective missions, providing significant capital to begin building their portfolios.

By 2030, GBE intends to establish a portfolio capable of delivering at least 15 GW of clean energy generation and storage capacity, while mobilising £15 billion of private finance over time. It also plans to support more than 1,000 local and community energy projects and invest £1 billion in UK technologies, manufacturing capability and supply chains.

Headquartered at Marischal Square in Aberdeen, GBE sees the city as its “corporate backbone”, drawing upon the North East’s extensive energy, engineering and commercial expertise.

The role:

Reporting directly to the CEO and operating as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Financial Officer will be accountable for the financial health, resilience and integrity of Great British Energy.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring robust financial reporting, controls, governance and regulatory compliance
  • Leading enterprise risk management and overseeing internal audit
  • Developing relationships with banks, infrastructure investors, co-developers and financiers
