Our Client

Our client is a pioneering, early-commercial-stage medical device company operating at the intersection of advanced hardware engineering, software automation, and specialist medical technology to save lives. Spun out from a leading UK university and NHS Foundation Trust, the company has developed a proprietary device built on a scientifically validated methodology with decades of clinical history.

Having completed its most recent funding round and expanded its team and geographic footprint across the North of England, the company is now entering a pivotal commercial phase. With its first-of-kind device preparing for clinical deployment, the organization requires an experienced CFO to join the executive leadership team and drive the financial and strategic architecture needed to support this next stage of growth.

The Opportunity

This is a foundational CFO appointment — the company's first dedicated Chief Financial Officer — at a critical inflection point in the business. The incoming CFO will be a senior strategic partner to the CEO, building the financial infrastructure, investor relationships, and corporate governance frameworks that will underpin the company's growth from development-stage MedTech to a commercially scalable, globally relevant medical device business.

The role spans financial leadership, fundraising strategy, regulatory financial compliance (including MHRA and FDA device commercialisation cost structures), and board-level reporting. This is a hands-on, high-impact position for an ambitious CFO who wants to play a defining role in building something truly meaningful — in a sector and a company where the stakes are real.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Governance

  • Own and oversee all financial operations of the company — including management accounts, statutory reporting, cash flow management, payroll, R&D tax credits, grant reporting, and financial controls.
  • Build and lead the finance function from the ground up — establishing robust processes, systems, and team structures appropriate to a scaling MedTech business preparing for clinical and commercial deployment.
  • Prepare, present, and own board-level financial reporting — including monthly management accounts, budget vs actual analysis, financial KPIs, and forward-looking financial models that reflect the company's development and commercialisation milestones.
  • Ensure full compliance with all statutory, regulatory, and grant reporting obligations — including Innovate UK, UKRI, and other public funding body requirements; VAT; R&D tax credits; Companies House filings; and audit preparation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Fundraising & Investor Relations

  • Lead the design and execution of future funding rounds — working closely with the CEO and Board to develop compelling investor materials, financial models, and strategic narratives for Series A and beyond.
  • Manage and develop relationships with existing investors and funding bodies — including venture capital partners, public sector funders, and strategic healthcare investors — ensuring transparent, timely, and professional financial communication.
  • Evaluate and structure non-dilutive funding opportunities — including grant applications, SBRI contracts, NHS innovation funding, and international grant programmes — in coordination with the operational and scientific leadership teams.
  • Lead financial due diligence processes for future investment rounds, strategic partnerships, licensing arrangements, and potential M&A activity.

Commercial Finance & Strategy

  • Develop and refine the company's commercial financial model — including pricing strategy for the medical device, healthcare system procurement structures, NHS and international payer reimbursement economics, and unit economics for scale.
  • Partner with the CEO and COO to build the financial architecture for commercial launch — including revenue recognition frameworks, distributor economics, capital equipment financing structures, and healthcare system contracting models.
  • Provide financial analysis and modelling to support strategic decisions including market prioritisation, geographic expansion, manufacturing investment, and partnership structuring.
  • Contribute to the company's broader strategic planning — bringing financial discipline and commercial insight to discussions on pipeline development, regulatory investment, and international market entry.

  • Oversee financial aspects of MHRA device regulatory submissions and FDA 510(k)/De Novo pathways — including cost modelling for regulatory timelines, clinical study budgeting, and post-market surveillance cost frameworks.
  • Manage financial risk across the business — including currency risk, grant clawback risk, IP valuation, and insurance — ensuring the company is appropriately protected at every stage of its development.

Candidate Profile

Experience

  • Proven CFO or senior financial leadership experience within a MedTech, medical device, diagnostics, or closely related life sciences or deep tech business — ideally at a development-stage or early-commercial company where you have navigated the transition from grant-funded R&D to commercial operation.
  • Demonstrable experience leading or co-leading fundraising rounds — ideally across venture capital, angel investment, and non-dilutive grant funding within the UK life sciences or MedTech ecosystem.
  • Strong understanding of the financial architecture of the medical device commercialisation pathway — including MHRA regulatory cost structures, NHS procurement economics, and the financial implications of CE marking and UKCA compliance.
  • Experience building finance functions from an early stage — hands-on, systems-oriented, and comfortable operating as a team of one while building toward a larger function.
  • Familiarity with public sector and innovation grant funding environments — Innovate UK, UKRI, NHS SBRI, Horizon Europe, or equivalent — is a significant advantage.

Personal Qualities

  • A strategic thinker and trusted executive partner — able to advise the CEO and Board with authority, challenge constructively, and bring clarity to complex financial and commercial decisions.
  • Highly credible with investors — polished, commercially astute, and experienced in presenting financial narratives that build investor confidence at both early and growth stages.
  • Entrepreneurial and hands-on — comfortable with the ambiguity and pace of a scaling start-up, willing to be deeply operational while maintaining strategic altitude.
  • Mission-driven — genuinely motivated by the company's purpose and the potential of this technology to save lives.
