Chief Medical Officer

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a licensed physician who advocates for the hospital with the Medical Staff, supporting our Performance Improvement, Patient Safety/Quality and Strategic Goals.

Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, the CMO serves as liaison for Wood County Hospital (WCH) with the Medical Staff and is an active member on the Staff. The CMO also functions as the physician administrative leader for the organization’s physician enterprise. This is an onsite position.

For the Hospital:

  • Active Member of the WCH Medical Staff.
  • Provides strategic oversight of clinical quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives through participation in key staff committees including but not limited to Medical Executive, Performance Improvement, Hospital Care Committee, Credentialing, Utilization Review, and Medical Records.
  • Functions as the Physician Advisor supporting Case Management, Discharge Planning, and clinical risk reduction activities.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between administration and the medical staff. In conjunction with the Chief Nursing Office (CNO) oversees the hospitalist provider team.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation and medical staff requirements, including survey and audit readiness. Supports incident management and corrective action efforts with the CNO and Risk Manager.
  • Partners with and supports the medical staff to promote engagement, collaboration, accountability, as well as problem resolution.
  • Participates in organizational strategic planning, leading the development, growth, and evaluation of clinical programs and service lines to meet community needs and organizational directives.
  • Participates in key administrative committees as directed by the CEO.

For the Physician Enterprise:

  • In conjunction with the administrative leader, develops and leads a physician governance structure for Wood Health and WCWC providers.
  • Develops and oversees an enterprise process improvement initiative to assure provider practice is within the standard of care and potential enhancements in practice are identified.
  • Participates in provider performance evaluations and provider counseling and discipline.
  • Supports development of enterprise annual budgets, strategic goals, and operating policy.
  • Participates in physician recruitment.
  • Maintains clinical privileges with part-time direct patient care duties.

For the Entity:

  1. Serves as the physician executive champion for clinical technology, partnering with organizational leaders to align information systems with clinical practice, improve quality, safety, and provider efficiency, and lead physician adoption of EHR, analytics, AI, clinical decision support, and other digital health initiatives.
  2. Prepare, prevent, protect and respond to support our culture of safety.
  3. Works hours per week in accordance with offer letter or per attributes of position at transfer request. May be expected to work longer hours as necessary.
  4. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education required: Completion of required education to include a Doctor of Medicine (M.D. or D.O) from an accredited medical school
  • License required: M.D. or D.O. licensure in the state of Ohio by the time of hire
  • Experience required: Five years’ experience in active clinical practice; Clinical practice experience in an independent community hospital setting
  • Certification required: Maintains Active Board certification in respective specialty; Physician Executive Certification or equivalent
  • Education preferred: None
  • License preferred: None
  • Experience preferred: Two years in medical administrative experience
  • Certification preferred: None
