Chief Officer

Location: Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8AJ Salary: Competitive salary plus excellent benefits Schedule: 48 hours/week (6 weeks on, 3 weeks off)

For applicants living beyond 80 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh, Serco will cover a maximum of 0.45p per mile for travel.

About the Role

As a Chief Officer in our Kyle of Lochalsh (BUTC) operations team, you’ll ensure vessel operations run safely, efficiently, and with purpose. Every decision shapes maritime capabilities, upholds standards, and supports services trusted by communities.

You’ll contribute to impactful maritime work, ensuring reliable vessel operations that communities depend on.

Responsibilities

You’ll be entrusted with:

  • Planning and supervising maintenance of deck areas (holds, hatches, superstructure).
  • Overseeing loading, discharge, and ballasting while ensuring safety, stability, and compliance.
  • Managing deck stores (stowage, inventory, and re-ordering).
  • Inspecting deck machinery, equipment, and records for high standards and readiness.
  • Preventing Oil Pollution Regulation infringements, collaborating closely with the Chief Engineer during bunkering and bilge transfers.
  • Acting as a Watchkeeping Officer, typically managing 4–8 hour shifts while ensuring full navigational control.

Requirements

To succeed, you’ll need:

  • A Certificate of Competence as Chief Officer (minimum 3000GT).
  • Up-to-date STCW qualifications, including survival, fire-fighting, safety, and security training.
  • Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach.
  • Experience in safety-critical environments.
  • An unrestricted ENG1 medical.
  • Clearance requirements: Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance (additional detail may be needed for Sectret, Top Secret, or CTC approval).

Applicants must also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire.
