The Opportunity
Sporting Jobs is retained by a growing, ambitious football club in the North of England to appoint a Chief Operating Officer. Off the back of strong progress on the pitch, the Club's ownership is now investing seriously in its commercial, operational and international future, and this hire will play a central role in shaping what comes next.
Reporting directly to ownership and the Board, the COO will take charge of day-to-day operations while driving the execution of an ambitious international growth strategy, spanning football operations, business operations, commercial development and global expansion. It's a rare kind of role, part operator, part strategist, part diplomat, suited to someone as comfortable improving matchday processes as they are negotiating an international partnership.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading the Club's operational strategy, translating ownership's vision into an executable plan, and building the leadership team, KPIs and governance to deliver it.
- Overseeing football operations, including first-team support, academy operations and football administration, working closely with the Sporting Director, Head Coach and football department.
- Driving the Club's international growth strategy, building partnerships with clubs, academies, universities, governments and commercial organisations worldwide.
- Identifying new international revenue opportunities across academies, tournaments, player pathways, education partnerships, licensing and strategic investment.
- Supporting commercial teams on sponsorship and partnerships and working with marketing to strengthen the Club's global brand and fan engagement.
- Overseeing stadium operations, facilities, matchday, finance, HR, IT, administration, compliance and risk management.
- Managing operational budgets, evaluating investment opportunities, and reporting regularly to the Board on performance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
