Chief Pharmacist
The Chief Pharmacist is a high-profile, Island-wide role providing strategic and professional leadership and fulfilling statutory functions for pharmacists across Jersey, as well as operational leadership for pharmacy services at Health & Care Jersey (HCJ). HCJ is at a pivotal stage of its development with ambitious plans for service transformation, including preparation for Jersey's new hospital.
The Pharmacy department structure too is at a significant development milestone, the department has recently been reviewed, with a particular focus on strengthening senior leadership capacity. The incoming Chief Pharmacist will have a significant impact, central to shaping the ongoing operating model. As the professional pharmacy leader for Jersey, the post-holder will have significant strategic influence beyond hospital services.
This includes supporting and shaping the Island's medicines legislation and regulatory framework, including the Misuse of Drugs, Medicines, and Pharmacy and Poisons (Jersey) Laws. The Chief Pharmacist will also develop strong partnerships with organisations such as the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and counterparts across other jurisdictions, ensuring Jersey remains aligned with emerging best practice and national developments.

A key aspect of the role is the opportunity to strengthen collaboration across primary care, community pharmacy, and secondary care. The Chief Pharmacist will lead Jersey's medicines optimisation agenda, helping to improve medicines choice and prescribing practice across the whole healthcare system. Working closely with clinicians, primary care providers, and community pharmacists, the post-holder will support initiatives that keep people well, promote care closer to home, and reduce avoidable hospital admissions. The role also presents opportunities to support the continued development of pharmacist independent prescribing within community and primary care settings.
Jersey's self-contained healthcare system offers a unique and rewarding leadership opportunity. Unlike many larger healthcare systems, the HCJ Pharmacy team simultaneously provides clinical pharmacy services, medicines governance and regulatory functions for the Island, and robust financial stewardship of medicines expenditure and medicines-related therapies. This breadth of responsibility provides an exceptional opportunity to shape policy, practice, and outcomes across an entire healthcare system.

Jersey's unique healthcare environment offers a rare opportunity to influence decision-making at the highest levels and make a visible impact across the whole health and care system. Candidates with significant experience operating at system level within NHS Integrated Care Boards, Health Boards, or similarly complex healthcare environments will be particularly well placed to succeed in this role.
