Chief Software Engineer

Location: London
Working pattern: Hybrid
Salary: £100,000–£130,000 + benefits

The Opportunity

We’re working with an established financial services organisation looking for a Chief Software Engineer to provide technical leadership across software engineering, architecture and delivery.
This is a senior role combining technical leadership, software architecture and people management, with Python and AWS at the heart of the technology environment.
You’ll work closely with senior stakeholders, shape the engineering roadmap and lead a high-performing team delivering secure, scalable software.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop a high-performing software engineering team.
  • Set technical direction across Python, AWS, software architecture and systems integration.
  • Own the software engineering roadmap and delivery of key initiatives.
  • Design and oversee complex, scalable software applications and services.
  • Drive improvements across CI/CD, automation, testing and deployment.
  • Make architectural decisions and manage technical risks and dependencies.
  • Ensure software meets high standards for security, reliability and performance.
  • Work closely with senior technology and business stakeholders.
  • Support recruitment, mentoring and career development across the engineering team.

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong background in software engineering and technical leadership.
  • Excellent Python development experience.
  • Strong commercial experience with AWS and cloud architecture.
  • Solid understanding of software architecture and distributed systems.
  • Experience with CI/CD, automation and systems integration.
  • Experience leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience within financial services or another regulated environment would be advantageous.
