Chief Risk Officer, Advisory & Lloyd’s Platform

(Insurance & Reinsurance Advisory)

London | Hybrid | Full-time

The opportunity

A founder-led insurance and reinsurance advisory is seeking a senior risk leader to work across Board-level advisory assignments and the development of a new Lloyd’s-focused regulated platform.

This is a rare role for someone who wants to combine senior risk advisory work with genuine ownership of risk strategy, governance, and framework development, rather than stepping into an established CRO function.

The role offers breadth with continuity: you will advise insurers, reinsurers, and other market participants today, while playing a significant role in building the risk capability required as the business develops its wider Lloyd’s platform. The role will carry the SMF4 remit for the regulated business, subject to the relevant approvals.

What you’ll do

You will work across two complementary pillars, with the balance developing as the business grows.

1) Senior risk advisory

  • Lead and deliver senior risk, governance, and regulatory advisory assignments for insurance and reinsurance clients
  • Advise Boards and senior management on risk strategy, risk appetite, governance, and enterprise risk management
  • Translate complex risk, actuarial, and capital issues into clear, decision-useful advice
  • Provide independent challenge while maintaining a commercial and pragmatic approach
  • Lead work across areas including ORSA, risk appetite, emerging risk, scenario analysis, operational risk, and resilience
  • Work closely with actuarial, underwriting, finance, compliance, and executive stakeholders
  • Prepare Board and senior management papers, risk assessments, and decision-support materials
  • Support clients through periods of growth, transformation, regulatory change, and new business development
  • Develop senior client relationships and contribute to the continued growth of the advisory proposition

2) CRO & Lloyd’s platform development

  • Play a key role in the Lloyd’s Making it Happen process, supporting the development, assessment, and progression of new syndicates and underwriting businesses
  • Subject to the relevant approvals, assume the SMF4 Chief Risk Officer responsibilities for the regulated business, once it is approved
  • Shape and implement the enterprise risk management framework for the developing regulated platform
  • Lead the development and ongoing oversight of the ORSA, including risk and capital assessment, stress and scenario testing, and Board engagement
  • Establish proportionate risk appetite, governance, policies, reporting, and control frameworks
  • Provide senior risk leadership and independent challenge as the operating model develops
  • Provide senior risk input into business planning, syndicate development, and approval activity
  • Work closely with senior management, Boards, and relevant Lloyd’s and regulatory stakeholders
  • Oversee key areas including operational resilience, third-party risk, technology risk, and other non-financial risks
  • Ensure emerging, strategic, and operational risks are identified, assessed, and appropriately managed
  • Develop Board and committee risk reporting, ensuring material risks are clearly articulated and appropriately escalated
  • Help build a strong risk culture and scalable risk capability as the platform grows

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience working within a consulting, advisory, or professional services environment would be highly advantageous.

You should also be comfortable operating in a client-facing environment, developing relationships, leading senior advisory engagements, and moving between external advisory work and regulated leadership responsibilities.

Experience supporting the establishment, approval, or development of new Lloyd’s businesses or syndicates would be particularly valuable.

Previous SMF4 experience is helpful, but we would also consider candidates with the experience, judgement, and seniority to be credible for a future SMF4 appointment.

What we offer

  • A senior role combining advisory variety with long-term ownership
  • The opportunity to shape risk capability from an early stage, rather than inherit an established function
  • Direct access to founders, Boards, and senior decision-makers
  • High trust, significant autonomy, and meaningful influence over how the business develops
  • Exposure across advisory, Lloyd’s market development, and regulated business
  • The opportunity to help shape a new risk function and broader Lloyd’s platform
  • Competitive package with growth potential as responsibilities expand
