Job Title: Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) – Advanced Materials & Engineering

Location: East Sussex

Salary: Competitive

Employment Type: Permanent

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week

The Role

As Chief Scientific Officer, you will be responsible for defining and delivering the company's technology strategy, ensuring innovation remains at the heart of the business. Working closely with the executive leadership team, you will lead scientific and engineering functions, oversee research and development programmes, and identify emerging technologies that will strengthen the company's competitive position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the company's technology vision, strategy, and long-term roadmap aligned with business objectives.
  • Lead and develop scientific, engineering, and R&D teams, mentoring senior technical specialists and attracting outstanding talent.
  • Drive innovation through the development of new technologies, advanced materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Oversee research and development programmes from concept through to implementation.
  • Collaborate with executive, commercial, and product leadership teams to ensure technology strategy supports business growth.
  • Manage technology budgets, resources, and project delivery.
  • Provide expert technical guidance to senior leadership, customers, and investors where required.
  • Monitor industry developments, emerging technologies, and competitor activity.
  • Protect intellectual property and ensure the security of sensitive technical information.
  • Support the continued growth and technical excellence of the organisation.

About You

You will be an accomplished scientific or technology leader with a proven track record of delivering innovation within complex engineering environments. Comfortable operating at executive level, you will combine strategic thinking with exceptional leadership skills and a passion for advancing technology.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 15-20 years' experience in senior technology or scientific leadership roles within complex engineering, manufacturing, or capital equipment environments.
  • Degree in Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related discipline.
  • Master's degree desirable.
  • Chartered status would be advantageous.
  • Extensive knowledge of advanced materials, additive manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to align technology strategy with business objectives.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to engage confidently with both technical and non-technical audiences, including investors and executive leadership.

Additional Information

  • Based on-site in East Sussex.
  • Occasional UK and international travel may be required.
