Key Details

Location: Sunderland, UK

Contract: Fractional to start with, but with the aim of going Full-Time.

Day rate: Dependent on experience

Reports to: CEO

Company Description

Okkulo Limited is an innovation-driven sports technology company focused on transforming elite athletic performance through advanced visual training systems.

The proprietary OKKULO technology uses carefully controlled lighting conditions to influence the interaction between the eyes and brain, resulting in faster response times and enhanced game perception. We're entering our next stage of growth, evolving from a hardware-led business into a performance platform, built around a new suite of software modules that will shape how we serve clients for years to come.

Role Description

Based in Sunderland, this is a genuine blank-canvas opportunity.

We're looking for a fractional CTO to lead the concept, design, and build of Okkulo's new software platform from the ground up: the architecture, the team, and the delivery model that will carry the business through this pivotal stage.

You'll work directly with our CEO and heads of department, with influence over technical direction. It's an open-ended fractional engagement with flexibility on time commitment for the right person, with the intention of becoming Okkulo's full-time CTO.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You Will Do

  • Own the technical vision and architecture for Okkulo's modular software platform — multiple interconnected products, built from a blank canvas.
  • Decide, and lead, the right delivery model for each module: in-house build, outsourced/agency partners, or a blend of both.
  • Identify, hire, and shape the skill sets Okkulo needs as the platform and team scale.
  • Design and implement a roadmap that gets value into customers' hands quickly, while keeping the architecture flexible for what comes next.
  • Bridge hardware and software decisions — our practitioner-facing tools run on connected devices in real-world testing environments, so judgement on mobile and integration choices matters, whatever the delivery model.
  • Bring informed thinking on data protection, security, and regulatory considerations across UK and US markets, including awareness of medical device-adjacent frameworks as our software evolves.
  • Act as a technical thought partner to the CEO and, where useful, to investors and the board.

What We Are Looking For

  • A strong track record building complex software from concept through delivery — ideally across multiple modules or products, not just a single application.
  • Experience across both in-house team-building and outsourced/agency delivery, with the judgement to know when to use which.
  • Solid SaaS foundations. Early-stage or scale-up SaaS leadership experience is essential. Sports technology background is a bonus, not a requirement.
  • International experience with security, privacy, and data protection across the UK and US.
  • Familiarity with US legal and medical device-related guidelines, or the confidence to get up to speed quickly as our product evolves.
  • Comfortable working fractionally, with flexibility to flex time commitment as the business needs.
  • Based in, or very close to Sunderland. In-person time will be part of the role, even with flexible scheduling.

How to Apply

Send us two things:

  • Your CV, but make it count. Tell us what you've actually done and built.
  • Cover Letter detailing builds you have lead and how you achieved it. 1 Page maximum. No template answers.

No recruiters. No agencies. Direct applications only.
