Chief Technology Officer

📍 Location: Soho, London (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)
💰 Salary: Up to £150,000 + performance bonus + equity
🕒 Type: Permanent

My client is a leading personal trainer software platform used by coaches, gyms, and fitness brands worldwide. The platform enables trainers to create, sell, and scale fitness, health, and lifestyle programmes online.

With a proven product, circa £2M ARR, and ambitious plans to scale to £10M+, they are now entering their next phase of growth and building the leadership team to support that journey.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Define and deliver their technology vision and roadmap towards £10M+ ARR
  • Lead the transition from outsourced development to a high-performing in-house engineering team
  • Build the engineering organisation, hiring strategy, and leadership structure
  • Own architecture decisions, platform modernisation, and technical direction
  • Improve scalability, reliability, security, and engineering standards
  • Establish strong engineering processes around delivery, testing, CI/CD, and observability
  • Build an excellent engineering culture focused on ownership and continuous improvement
  • Partner closely with product leadership to align technology decisions with business goals
  • Develop engineering leaders and create a scalable team structure
  • Champion the use of AI and data to improve engineering velocity and product outcomes
  • Communicate technical strategy, risks, and investment needs to the wider leadership team

What They're Looking For

  • Proven CTO, VP Engineering, or senior technology leadership experience within a startup or scale-up environment
  • Experience building engineering teams and bringing capability in-house
  • Strong architectural judgement across SaaS platforms, APIs, infrastructure, and security
  • Ability to stay technically credible while leading through teams and managers
  • Experience managing hybrid teams including employees, outsourced partners, and distributed teams
  • Experience delivering native mobile applications across iOS and Android
  • Track record of using AI to improve engineering, product delivery, or operations
  • Strong commercial mindset with the ability to connect technology decisions to business outcomes
  • Experience partnering with product and commercial leaders at executive level
  • Clear communicator who can simplify complex technical decisions
  • Comfortable operating in fast-changing, ambiguous environments

  • Experience with Ruby on Rails platforms
  • Experience with subscription or marketplace businesses
  • Experience working with payment platforms such as Stripe
  • Experience scaling consumer-facing SaaS products

Current Tech Landscape

  • Ruby on Rails API (Ruby 2.6 / Rails 5.2)
  • PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, AWS S3, and Stripe
  • Vue 2 frontend with TypeScript
  • Native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin)
  • Infrastructure including Sentry, Datadog, Mixpanel, Intercom, Firebase, and GitLab CI
