Band 6 Children's Research Nurse

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Children's Research Nurse to join our Children's Research Team.

Our research programme takes a holistic approach to patient care and makes an important contribution to improving healthcare and outcomes for children and young people.

As a Children's Research Nurse, you will play a key role in the conduct, coordination and delivery of clinical research studies across The Royal London Hospital (RLH), Newham University Hospital (NUH) and Whipps Cross Hospital (WXH).

Working Closely With The Wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), Investigators, Sponsors, Research & Development (R&D) Teams And Clinical Services, You Will Ensure That Research Studies Are Delivered Safely, Effectively And In Accordance With:

  • Study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Barts Health policies and procedures
  • Local and national guidance
  • Relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
  • High standards of clinical care and patient experience

Main duties of the job

You will have responsibility for managing your own caseload of children and their carers participating in clinical research studies. This will include assessing and managing care pathways, recruiting and educating participants, monitoring children throughout their study participation, and ensuring accurate and timely collection and documentation of research data.

You will contribute to the successful delivery of studies on the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio, ensuring studies are completed reliably, efficiently and within agreed timelines.

The post holder will work under the leadership of the Senior Research Nurse and Children's Lead Research Nurse within the Royal London Hospital Children's Clinical Research Facility.

We are looking for a registered nurse who is enthusiastic, self-motivated, organised and committed to delivering high-quality clinical care and research. You will need:

Previous clinical research experience is essential, and this role provides an excellent opportunity for a nurse wishing to further develop their knowledge and skills within childrens clinical research.

The role will require flexibility to work weekends, bank holidays and night shifts as required by the needs of the research service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Children's Nurse with current NMC registration
  • First-level degree in nursing or relevant subject
  • Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to children's nursing and/or clinical research
  • Current Good Clinical Practice (GCP) E6 (R3) training/certificate

Desirable

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in clinical research, children's nursing or a related area
  • Healthcare management or leadership qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial post-registration experience as a Children's Nurse within an NHS or equivalent healthcare setting
  • Experience of working at Band 6 level or demonstrating equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Experience of recruiting patients/participants to research studies, including clinical trials, within a healthcare setting.
  • Experience of coordinating and managing the care of children and young people
  • Experience of working autonomously and managing an individual caseload
  • Experience of working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of coordinating a shift, clinical area or service and providing support to junior colleagues
  • Experience of identifying, managing and escalating clinical or operational risks
  • Experience of learning from incidents, complaints or feedback and contributing to improvements in practice

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a children's clinical research environment
  • Experience of working across multiple clinical specialties or hospital sites.
  • Experience of working with research sponsors, Principal Investigators, R&D departments or study coordinating centres
  • Experience of research monitoring, audit or regulatory inspections

  • Sound understanding of current issues and developments in children's nursing.
  • Understanding of the principles and application of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Understanding of clinical research processes, including recruitment, informed consent/assent, data collection and participant safety
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children and young people and the processes for recognising and escalating safeguarding concerns.
  • Understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults and the principles of Mental Capacity Act legislation, where applicable
  • Understanding of clinical governance, risk management and incident reporting
  • Understanding of confidentiality, information governance and data protection requirements
  • Knowledge of the professional responsibilities of a registered nurse and the NMC Code

  • Knowledge of relevant research legislation, regulatory frameworks and the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.
  • Knowledge of research governance and the roles and responsibilities of sponsors, Principal Investigators and research teams
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles

Skills

  • Skilled in undertaking holistic clinical assessments of children and young people
  • Ability to identify clinical deterioration and take appropriate action, including escalation
  • Ability to safely undertake research-related clinical procedures within scope of practice.
  • Competent in venepuncture and cannulation
  • Ability to engage with and recruit children, young people and their parents/carers into clinical research studies
  • Ability to facilitate informed consent and assent in an age- and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Ability to collect, accurately document and manage clinical and research data
  • Effective decision-making, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and manage an individual caseload
  • Ability to prioritise and manage competing demands while meeting study and service deadlines

Desirable

  • Competence in ECG recording
  • Experience of other research-specific clinical procedures relevant to the Children's Research portfolio.
