About BBVA
BBVA is a global company with more than 160 years of history that operates in more than 25 countries where we serve more than 80 million customers. We are more than 121,000 professionals working in multidisciplinary teams with profiles as diverse as financiers, legal experts, data scientists, developers, engineers, and designers.
About the Role
CIB Risk Banks & Finance is responsible for assessing the credit risk of financial institutions, assigning internal ratings, and defining the maximum risk appetite, both for credit and settlement risk.
About the Job
The candidate will join a team of 10 professionals covering banks and other financial institutions. The role requires a strong understanding of financial institutions, their financial statements, and risk profiles, as well as the products that generate credit and settlement exposure. Staying up to date on markets, regulation, and product developments is key to supporting sound risk decisions and contributing to healthy and profitable business growth.
Main Responsibilities
- Credit analysis and risk assessment of financial institutions, with a primary focus on banks. This includes analyzing financial statements and key credit fundamentals, including profitability, asset quality, capital, funding, and liquidity, as well as assessing the relevant industry, country, regulatory, and market environment.
- Preparation of risk proposals and definition of limits / maximum risk appetite by product, summarized in the Financial Program, and presentation of proposals to the relevant Risk Committees. As part of this process, you will assess the individual credit profile of each institution, calculate its internal rating, and determine an appropriate risk appetite across different products and types of exposure.
- Understanding and assessment of the products and transactions generating exposure to financial institutions, considering their specific credit and settlement risk characteristics when defining limits and risk appetite.
- Close and regular interaction with Business, discussing risk needs, proposed transactions, and limits prior to their submission to committee. The role also involves coordination with other GRM teams across geographies and with local credit risk teams, which in turn interact with their respective local business areas.
- Participation in cross-functional and multidisciplinary projects, including the development and implementation of new internal rating models and initiatives aimed at introducing AI capabilities into GRM processes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
