We are Hiring: Civic Engagement Manager

London Borough of Hackney

Hybrid – 2–3 days/week in office

Rate: £188.55 per day

Role Overview

The London Borough of Hackney is seeking an experienced Civic Engagement Manager to lead the planning and delivery of key civic, ceremonial and community events and provide proactive support to the Mayor and Speaker.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver the annual civic events programme, including Remembrance Sunday, Holocaust Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day and the Annual Meeting civic reception.
  • Coordinate civic and ceremonial engagements, receptions, flag-raising events, twinning activities and community events.
  • Manage the Speaker’s Office, including enquiries, correspondence, expenditure and temporary staff.
  • Provide advice to the Speaker, Mayor and senior officers on civic protocol, ceremonial matters and politically sensitive issues.
  • Prepare briefings, speeches and supporting materials for civic engagements.
  • Support the Mayor and Speaker with community engagement and fundraising activities.
  • Maintain civic regalia, artefacts and inventories, ensuring appropriate security, policies and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate Speaker transport and civic macebearer arrangements.
  • Promote local democracy through initiatives such as Town Hall tours and Local Democracy Week.
  • Review events and implement improvements and best practice.
  • Support the Council’s civic response to significant or sensitive events.
  • Attend occasional evening and weekend events as required.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in civic, ceremonial, corporate or public-sector event management.
  • Experience supporting a Mayor, Speaker, Chair, elected members or senior public officials.
  • Understanding of civic/democratic procedures, protocol and political sensitivity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparing briefings and speeches.
  • Excellent organisation and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Experience with fundraising strategies or fundraising events.
  • Strong stakeholder management and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team.
  • Degree-level capability or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional evenings and weekends.
