Civil Design Engineer
Location: Hitchin
Salary: £35,000 - £45,000
Type: Full-Time | Permanent
I'm working with a well-established independent multidisciplinary engineering consultancy that is looking to add a Civil Design Engineer to its Hitchin team.
The office offers a good alternative to the London consultancy market - giving you the opportunity to work on a strong range of development and infrastructure projects, while being based outside of London and away from the daily London commute.
You'll work across residential, commercial, education, healthcare, retail and leisure projects, gaining exposure to a broad range of civil engineering design work.
The Role
You'll be involved in:
- Civil infrastructure and development design from concept through to construction
- Drainage, SuDS, highways and external works
- Levels, earthworks and cut/fill modelling
- Preparing drawings, calculations, specifications and technical reports
- Drainage strategies and flood risk assessments
- 3D ground modelling and detailed infrastructure design
- Working with structural engineers, architects, contractors and clients
- Supporting projects through planning and detailed design stages

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
