Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Civil Design Engineer with a background in Utility Engineering and experience within the water industry, to join our integrated design team.
In this role, you will play a key part in the development and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects, supporting designs from initial concept through to detailed design, construction and commissioning. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, practical design solutions that meet client and project requirements.
The role is based at the Peter Duffy Ltd Head Office in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The position follows a hybrid working arrangement, with an expectation to be office-based at least four days per week.
Key Duties
- Prepare and develop design solutions at various stages of a project, supporting Design Engineering activities related to civil design and survey information.
- Produce design documentation including reports, specifications, calculations, and cost estimates. Attend client meetings when required and review the work of colleagues to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Maintain effective communication with relevant team members and internal and external stakeholders to support strong collaboration and ensure tasks are delivered right-first-time and in line with project programme dates.
- Conduct site surveys, develop detailed survey plans for external suppliers, and produce comprehensive reports based on the findings.
- Work closely with other members of the design team to maintain the consistency, accuracy, and integrity of the overall design.
- Assist in resolving technical issues and responding to design-related queries associated with your projects, both site and office based.
- Attend engineering events and industry expos where appropriate, helping to identify and adopt the latest technologies and industry best practices.
- Follow company quality management procedures in accordance with ISO 9001 standards.
- Support survey activities, including data review and evaluation, and assist in the development of Pre-Construction Information (PCI) provided by the client.
- Provide support and mentoring to junior members of the design team.

Qualifications
Essential Skills, you will:
- Be a qualified engineer and ideally Chartered, or working towards Chartership, with membership of a relevant professional institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
- Have demonstrable civil design experience within the UK water sector, including projects involving water treatment, drainage, clean water networks, rising mains, and sewer separation.
- Possess a strong understanding of water industry standards and guidance, such as CIWEM and CESWI.
- Be familiar with quality, environmental, and information management procedures in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 19650, and ISO 14001.
Preferred Skills, Ideally, You Will Also
- Have experience using industry-standard design software such as InfoDrainage, AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D.
- Be technically competent in hydraulic design principles, with the ability to undertake manual calculations where software tools are not applicable. Experience with hydraulic profiling would be advantageous.
- Have the ability to design structural elements such as slabs, cover slabs, and concrete hardstandings.
- Knowledge and experience of HazOp / ALM requirements.
- Have knowledge of additional water industry standards, such as WIMES.
- Understand the integration of design outputs within BIM models and workflows.
- Be familiar with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM).
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development, keeping up to date with industry innovations and developments in design software and tools.
