What's the role all about?
This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your engineering knowledge and practical skills while studying towards a Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship.
You'll gain hands-on experience supporting the maintenance, improvement and development of the Port's infrastructure, working alongside experienced engineering professionals who will help you build the skills and experience needed for a successful engineering career.
No previous engineering experience is required. What matters most is your enthusiasm, willingness to learn and passion for engineering.
The Apprenticeship
You'll study towards your BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering with one of our university partners:
- Northumbria University – 5 years
- Teesside University – 6 years (includes a foundation year; this may be reduced to 5 years depending on your existing qualifications)
What you'll be doing
No two days are the same in this role. You'll support a variety of engineering and infrastructure projects across the Port, including:

- Assisting with the planning and delivery of infrastructure maintenance and improvement projects.
- Supporting the supervision of contractors carrying out engineering and construction works.
- Helping prepare engineering drawings, technical specifications and project documentation.
- Carrying out site inspections and surveys across the Port estate.
- Supporting the maintenance of quays, roads, drainage systems and other civil engineering assets.
- Updating engineering drawings and records using digital systems.
- Learning how projects are planned, managed and delivered safely and efficiently.
- Working closely with colleagues, contractors and external partners to support engineering activities.
- Developing an understanding of environmental, quality and health and safety standards within a live operational environment.
What we're looking for
You don't need to be an engineering expert yet. We're looking for someone who is curious, motivated and excited about building a career in Civil Engineering.
You'll need to have:
- A genuine interest in engineering, construction or infrastructure.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- A responsible approach to health, safety and the environment.
Essential requirements:
- GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) at Grade 4/C or above
- A-Level Mathematics, Physics or Engineering or BTEC or equivalent qualification in Engineering or Construction (requirement to reach 112 UCAS Points)
- Basic IT skills and confidence using Microsoft Office applications.
