Help us create a better future, quicker

Our industry is experiencing unprecedented transformation as we work towards Net Zero. SP Energy Networks is delivering multiple projects simultaneously, overhauling our network to enhance resilience and secure electricity supply for our communities' economic growth. As a Civils Engineer (Development), you will play a vital role in this transformation by undertaking site inspections of substation construction projects from 11kV to 33kV. You will ensure works are carried out according to approved construction plans, SPEN building specifications, and best practice standards. Using your professional judgement and technical expertise, you will provide design and construction guidance to internal Design functions and external Framework Contractors. This is an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact on critical infrastructure that powers communities across the North West of England.

What you'll be doing

  • Conduct regular inspections of building work at various stages of completion, measuring and sampling building materials to verify their quality meets required standards
  • Confirm that construction work aligns with approved plans and SPEN specifications, while providing technical design assistance to SPM Design, customer engagement teams, and other teams during project design phases
  • Become well-versed in the SPEN Civil specification for Primary Substation Civil works, reviewing end-of-project returns including as-built documentation to ensure civil works are properly recorded within SPEN corporate systems
  • Review financial applications made via framework arrangements to ensure they align with works delivered on site
  • Maintain quality and consistency of technical and construction output across all projects
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders and customers on behalf of ScottishPower, facilitating delivery of strategic goals
  • Promote an exemplary safety culture, ensuring all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through activities and incorporated into project designs
  • Contribute to team development by mentoring and training less experienced team members, graduates, and trainees, helping to build capability across the organization
  • Manage a 6-month work bank of site inspections in coordination with design teams, overseeing civil works for Primary Projects in the delivery phase up to and including 33kV, typically valued at approximately £25m per annum

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
