Engineer - Highways and Drainage
Locations: Bristol | Woking, Surrey | Aldershot, Hampshire | Christchurch, Dorset
Employment: Full-time | Hybrid working, typically three days per week in the office

Mayer Brown is looking for a Civil Engineer to join our growing Highways and Drainage team.
This is an opportunity for an Engineer with experience in development-related infrastructure design who wants to broaden their technical capability, take greater responsibility for projects and progress their career within an established independent consultancy.
You will work on highway and drainage infrastructure for a varied portfolio of development projects, supporting schemes from initial concept and planning through detailed design, technical approval and construction.
You will work closely with experienced engineers, project managers, clients and approving authorities, while receiving support to develop towards professional qualification and the next stage of your career.
What you'll be doing
Your work will include:
- Preparing highway and drainage designs for development projects using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Developing designs to support Section 38, Section 278 and Section 104 technical approvals.
- Preparing highway layouts, levels, earthworks and drainage designs.
- Undertaking drainage calculations and contributing to surface water drainage strategies.
- Supporting the preparation of flood risk and drainage assessments where appropriate.
- Applying relevant standards including DMRB, Manual for Streets, local highway standards and relevant drainage guidance.
- Producing technical drawings, calculations, specifications and reports.
- Liaising with clients, project managers, local highway authorities, water companies and other members of multidisciplinary project teams.
- Managing your own workload and delivering agreed tasks to programme and budget.
- Reviewing technical information and, as your experience develops, supporting and checking work produced by junior colleagues.
- Contributing ideas and practical solutions that improve the quality and deliverability of our designs.

What we're looking for
We are particularly interested in people with around 2 plus years' experience in UK civil engineering or development infrastructure design, although capability and relevant experience are more important than an exact number of years.
You should have:
- A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience of highway and/or drainage infrastructure design associated with UK development projects.
- Good working knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Experience of, or developing competence in, Autodesk Civil 3D.
- An understanding of highway and drainage design principles.
- Familiarity with the S38, S278 and/or S104 technical approval processes.
- An understanding of relevant UK design standards and guidance.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to organise your workload and work effectively across several projects.
- A proactive approach and an interest in developing your technical and professional skills.
It would be particularly useful if you also have experience of:
- MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage and/or Causeway Flow.
- Surface water drainage design from first principles.
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).
- Flood Risk Assessments and drainage strategies.
- Detailed highway design, including levels, junctions and access arrangements.
- Working with local highway authorities, water companies or other technical approving bodies.
A full UK driving licence would be useful as some projects require site visits.
You do not need to meet every desirable requirement. If you have a strong grounding in civil engineering design and are keen to develop your highways and drainage experience, we would still like to hear from you.
