Civil Engineering Technician (Level 3) Apprenticeship

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated enthusiastic individual looking to start a career in engineering while gaining hands-on experience. Working alongside experienced engineers and technicians at our London/Birmingham office, you will learn how engineering solutions are developed, modelled, and delivered.

What You'll Do at Work

  • Support civil engineering projects by creating and modifying engineering drawings, documents, and specifications
  • Assist with engineering calculations, technical sketches, plans, and reports
  • Collect, analyse, and interpret engineering data to support design development
  • Support the use of digital engineering software and tools including CAD, BIM, and Revit
  • Assist engineers and technicians with project design and delivery activities
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, engineering standards, and environmental requirements
  • Support the implementation of health and safety procedures and site safety requirements
  • Assist in identifying risks and developing solutions to engineering challenges
  • Communicate effectively with project teams, clients, and stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Maintain accurate project records and documentation
  • Promote equality, diversity, inclusion, and professional behaviours in the workplace

What You'll Learn

Course Contents

  • Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
  • Apply key principles, techniques, and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
  • Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models, and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
  • Apply statutory health, safety, and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
  • Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
  • Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions, and plan for wider sustainability
  • Plan, carry out, and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
  • Consider equality, diversity, and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
  • Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake, and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Training Schedule

This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, one day in College at the Blossomfield Road Solihull Campus with the remainder of the week spent in your place of work under the direction of your employer. The work in college is predominantly classroom-based with units such as Surveying taking place in part outside and drawing units delivered in a design classroom. There will also be some lab sessions to support learning.

More Training Information

The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at college is assessed through examinations, controlled assignments, written assignments, and practical observations. (Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering).

The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace will be reviewed during regular visits by a college assessor.

Completion will be achieved by successfully passing the End Point Assessment with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. Institution of Civil Engineers). This will consist of a presentation and structured interview.

Essential Qualifications

  • GCSE in:

    • 3 other (grade 4 or above)
    • English (grade 4 or above)
    • Maths (grade 4 or above)
  • BTEC in:

    • National Diploma PPP (grade pass)

  • Have lived in England for the previous three years
  • Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or educational programme

  • Previous engineering, construction, or technical work experience
