Role Purpose:
As the Civil Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for a number of projects within the business unit, providing leadership and expertise while monitoring the progressive performance of Inspection and Test activities associated with civil construction works. The position will support project(s) from pre-construction phase through to successful project handover, ensuring all quality control deliverables are completed in accordance with project specifications, client requirements, and industry standards.
Civil QC Engineer Responsibilities:
- Lead by example in the areas of ethics, EHS, cultural sensitivity, diversity, teamwork, quality culture, and behaviours.
- Comply with all Project EHS requirements including PPE, work permits, procedures, etc. Where required, support the development of project-specific method statements and inspection test plans.
- Understand Kirby values and Quality Policy and create a culture of "being proud of the projects we deliver" and "Right First Time" amongst the team.
- Establish close working relationships with cross-functional departments (Planning, Engineering, Operations, Commissioning, EHS, etc.), including supply chain and client stakeholders.
- Liaise with the Kirby Autodesk ACC team for field space creation and project custom attributes.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and checklist approvals for civil works in line with project specifications and submittal due dates.
- Develop and agree Quality Record and Handover Dossier requirements with relevant project stakeholders.
- Define and develop inspection boundaries, hold points, witness points, and testing requirements for civil works packages, including tracking of quality documentation.
- Implement quality tracking and verification processes for construction materials including concrete, reinforcement, structural steel, aggregates, drainage products, and other permanent works materials.
- Encourage progressive compilation of lessons learned during project execution. Conduct project lessons learned workshops with supply chain and project teams to prevent recurrence of issues.
- Compile hard copy and/or digital quality dossiers for project handover. Track issues, defects, and snags while driving closeout with project teams and ensuring data integrity is maintained.
- Review benchmark and first-of-kind activities and report progress.
- Review and monitor calibration certificates for surveying, testing, and measurement equipment.
- Monitor Power BI analytics for accurate project reporting on quality issues, inspections, checklists, and planned versus actual metrics.
- Ensure data integrity across BIM 360 and ACC project platforms, ensuring quality observations and issues are categorised correctly with appropriate ownership and due dates.
- Monitor KPI performance and supply chain quality performance, developing action plans where required.
- Promote a positive quality culture onsite.
- Identify and recognise operatives and subcontractors demonstrating quality excellence onsite.
- Complete root cause analysis, manage NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports), and monitor corrective and preventative actions where required.
- Verify quality compliance of civil works including earthworks, foundations, reinforced concrete structures, cable trenches, ducting systems, drainage networks, roads, hardstands, and substation infrastructure.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
