Experienced Civil & Structural Design Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Civil & Structural Design Engineer to take ownership of design and coordination activities across major electrical infrastructure projects. The role involves multidisciplinary engineering, design governance, technical coordination, and supporting projects from commercial transfer through to practical completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and coordinate design packages from Commercial Transfer through to Practical Completion across multiple electrical infrastructure projects.
- Review, comment on and align Employer’s Requirements to support early design and tender activities.
- Provide technical support to procurement and construction teams throughout project delivery.
- Produce designs where required using hand calculations, spreadsheets and specialist design software.
- Undertake design governance checks and technical reviews of work produced by internal and external designers.
- Ensure third-party design deliverables comply with contractual requirements and provide practical, buildable and economic solutions.
- Ensure design outputs are fully aligned with the required design inputs.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and develop appropriate scoping documents.
- Author and manage Scopes of Work and design tender packages.
- Review design packages and identify interfaces between civil, structural, architectural and building services disciplines.
- Support the planning and scheduling of design activities in line with procurement and construction strategies.
- Monitor design progress, quality and performance against project objectives and take corrective action where required.
- Participate in and lead design reviews.
- Lead technical discussions between designers, consultants and project teams.
- Define technical requirements, deliverables and design scopes.
- Develop and continually review design schedules to ensure timely delivery.
- Coordinate and oversee building services / M&E design interfaces.
- Identify when designs are subject to Building Regulations and ensure applicable requirements are incorporated into the technical solution.
- Identify, quantify and manage design changes that may affect project budgets and schedules.
- Undertake site visits to identify project constraints and support the resolution of construction-related technical issues.

- Strong experience in both civil and structural design, supported by broad architectural knowledge.
- Experience working within or alongside a civil/structural design consultancy.
- A working knowledge of M&E design concepts, principles and multidisciplinary coordination.
- Experience with earthworks design and a working knowledge of the Specification for Highway Works.
- Experience using computational structural design software such as MasterSeries, TEDDS or STAAD.Pro.
- The ability to interpret and assess pre-construction information, including drainage impact assessments and geotechnical reports.
- Experience reviewing calculations produced by others and assessing their suitability, accuracy, economic viability and level of detail.
- The ability to undertake detailed reviews of hand calculations and outputs from computer-based design packages.
- An understanding of planning consents and experience coordinating technical requirements with third parties.
- Experience delivering multidisciplinary projects, ideally within power transmission or comparable sectors such as energy-from-waste, petrochemical or water.
- Strong all-round technical knowledge.
- Working knowledge of British and European Standards, Codes of Practice and Building Regulations.
- Experience scheduling design activities and managing interfaces, dependencies and milestone dates.
- Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and associated health and safety legislation.
- The ability to provide clear technical instructions to external design consultancies and manage design scope and timescales.
- Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
- A relevant design, engineering or construction qualification.
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional experience.
