Location: Kingston upon Thames, Greater London
Job type: Full-time, permanent

Salary: £28,000–£45,000 gross per annum, depending on relevant experience, demonstrated competence and the level of responsibility undertaken

About GEM Enterprise

GEM Enterprise Ltd is a structural and civil engineering consultancy delivering design, investigations, appraisals, technical reporting, strengthening and remedial solutions, and construction-stage support.

We are seeking a practical, organised Civil & Structural Engineer to join our team and contribute across varied building, civil engineering and specialist structural projects.

The Role

You will contribute to structural calculations, analytical models, drawings, inspections and technical reports, while also supporting tenders, technical research, project documentation and professional correspondence.

Engineering is central to the position, and tendering and day-to-day project support are integral responsibilities. This is not primarily a site-management, setting-out or CAD/BIM-only role. Applicants must demonstrate personal involvement in professional structural calculations and engineering documentation; academic projects or site-supervision experience alone do not meet this requirement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare calculations, analytical models, drawings and technical details for design, assessment, alterations, strengthening and remedial works.
  • Review drawings, structural arrangements, loads, survey findings and test results; record assumptions, limitations and information requiring verification.
  • Attend inspections, measured surveys and investigations; record findings accurately and help coordinate investigation methods appropriate to each project.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, schedules and engineering recommendations for review, and produce or update AutoCAD drawings.
  • Assist with tenders, framework applications, supplier questionnaires, fee proposals and supporting evidence; research technical guidance, products, suppliers and project requirements.
  • Draft professional emails, technical enquiries and meeting notes; liaise with clients, contractors and specialists; maintain project files, trackers and document revisions.
  • Support project planning and construction-stage engineering, including quality, design-risk and health-and-safety documentation within GEM’s agreed scope.
  • Work will be assigned within your assessed competence and will follow GEM’s technical checking and approval procedures.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant professional structural-analysis and design experience, supported by examples of calculations and engineering documents you have personally prepared. You must be able to progress defined tasks with appropriate technical direction and review.
  • Sound understanding of structural behaviour, load paths and common construction materials, particularly reinforced concrete and steel, with knowledge of timber and masonry.
  • Working knowledge of applicable British Standards, Eurocodes and UK National Annexes, relevant Building Regulations and CDM requirements. Overseas experience is welcome where relevant competence and understanding of UK requirements can be demonstrated.
  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD and practical experience with at least one structural-analysis package, such as SAP2000, Autodesk Robot, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, Tekla Structural Designer or equivalent. Calculation tools such as Tekla Tedds are also relevant.
  • Strong written and spoken English, including the ability to understand technical information and site instructions and prepare accurate report drafts and professional emails. Good Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF-document, research and organisational skills are essential.

  • A suitable CSCS card, or eligibility and willingness to obtain one before attending sites that require it, together with completion of relevant inductions and task-specific training.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with existing structures, inspections, refurbishment, strengthening or construction-stage support is advantageous. Buildings, bridges, car parks, access ramps and other civil structures are all relevant; experience in every asset type is not required.
  • Tender or framework experience, additional CAD/BIM skills, professional membership and a driving licence valid for use in the UK are desirable. Chartered status is not essential.
