Fawley Refinery, Hampshire
Role Overview
We are seeking a Junior Civil / Structural Engineer to join the Engineering Services team supporting refinery and chemical plant operations at Fawley. This role is suited to an early-career engineer with a solid technical foundation and at least 3 years of relevant experience, looking to further develop within an operating oil refinery environment.
The role involves supporting plant operations, inspections, maintenance, and project delivery, working under the guidance of senior engineers in a safety-critical, highly regulated setting.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Engineering & Operations Support
- Provide civil and structural engineering support to daily refinery operations, including plant modifications, upgrades, repairs, and new construction
- Assist with structural inspections, condition assessments, and evaluations of plant facilities
- Support civil/structural design and construction activities to ensure compliance with company standards, industry codes, and UK regulations
- Support operational teams with risk management activities in line with Operation Integrity Management System (OIMS) requirements
Engineering Management & Change Control
- Review and support Management of Change (MoC) documentation, engineering specifications, and design appraisals
- Assist in interpreting and applying company practices and industry standards to refinery facilities
- Support site reliability initiatives, including incident investigations, risk assessments, and risk-based work selection

Projects & Continuous Improvement
- Provide civil/structural engineering input to sustaining and capital projects, from concept through execution
- Assist with development of scopes of work, technical specifications, and contractor documentation
- Support contractor activities and review engineering deliverables under supervision
- Contribute to continuous improvement of plant reliability, safety, and engineering work practices
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- BSc in Civil or Structural Engineering (MSc preferred)
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience, preferably within heavy industry, oil & gas, petrochemical facilities, power generation, or an engineering consultancy supporting such sectors
- Solid technical and analytical skills with the ability to assess and compare engineering solutions
- Familiarity with structural analysis and design principles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to work effectively in a safety-critical industrial environment

Experience or working knowledge in the following areas is desirable:
- Structural design and analysis of steel and reinforced concrete structures
- Foundations and pile design
- Structural inspection, condition assessment, and rehabilitation
- Basic geotechnical engineering principles
- Civil infrastructure (roads, drainage, sewers, underground structures)
- Industrial buildings, stacks, chimneys, and rotating equipment foundations
- Familiarity with structural analysis and design software
