The Role
The Marine Claims Adjuster will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Marine claims assigned to them, acting on both lead and follow business across Starr's Lloyd's and Company Market portfolios. The role will involve handling a broad range of Marine Cargo, Project Cargo, Specie, Marine & Energy Liability and Ports & Terminals claims, ensuring their efficient investigation, reserving, management and resolution in accordance with policy terms, market practices and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate and champion an inclusive culture that reinforces Starr's brand, values and behaviours;
- Adjust, assess and manage assigned Marine claims within delegated authority;
- Review coverage positions and establish appropriate reserving throughout the lifecycle of a claim;
- Ensure claims are handled proactively and in accordance with Starr's Claims Management Guidelines;
- Manage Cargo, Project Cargo, Specie, Marine & Energy Liability and Ports & Terminals claims from notification through settlement;
- Support the handling of claims arising from the associated War & Terrorism products and Specialty Reinsurance portfolios as required, working collaboratively with colleagues across the broader Claims function;
- Define file strategies and negotiate settlements in accordance with policy terms and conditions;
- Manage relationships with surveyors, lawyers, loss adjusters, forensic accountants and other specialist service providers;
- Ensure compliance with applicable Lloyd's standards and all regulatory and statutory requirements relating to claims handling;
- Report significant losses promptly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders, including reinsurers where appropriate;
- Attend market claims meetings and broker meetings as required;
- Represent Starr when liaising with brokers, policyholders, service providers and market stakeholders;
- Support and collaborate closely with Marine Underwriters, including attendance at underwriting meetings, claims reviews, renewal discussions and wording reviews;
- Aid pricing, reserving, finance, actuarial and outwards reinsurance teams as required;
- Travel domestically and internationally where necessary;
- Assist with vendor management, panel reviews and service-provider audits;
- Support claims audits and regulatory reviews;
- Assist with internal and external claims presentations, studies and portfolio analysis;
- Champion Starr within the market and internally through the delivery of exceptional claims service;
- Identify emerging claims trends and provide feedback to underwriting and management;
- Commit to continuous professional development and enhancement of technical knowledge; and
- Work effectively with colleagues across Starr to deliver business objectives.

Essential Qualifications, Skills And Experience
- Strong academic background, with progress towards ACII qualifications advantageous;
- Relevant Marine insurance claims experience within the Lloyd's and/or London Market;
- Experience handling Marine Cargo, Liability, Project Cargo, Specie or related specialty marine claims;
- Strong understanding of policy coverage analysis and reserving principles;
- Experience managing lawyers, surveyors, loss adjusters and other third-party service providers;
- Knowledge of Lloyd's claims processes, including Lead Claims Arrangements;
- Working knowledge of ECF2 and London Market claims systems, with working knowledge of Sequel and/or DOCOsoft an advantage.
- Experience participating in market meetings and broker engagement;
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills;
- Sound analytical and problem-solving capabilities; and
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
