What is the job role?
Main Purpose
- Be responsible for the learning and achievement of all pupils in the class ensuring equality of opportunity for all.
- Be responsible and accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct.
- Treat pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect and at all time observing boundaries appropriate to a teacher’s professional position.
- Work proactively and effectively in collaboration and partnership with learnings, parents/carers, other staff and external agencies on the best interests of the pupils.
- Act within the statutory frameworks which set out their professional duties and responsibilities in line with the current teacher’s standards.
- Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school.
Supervisory Responsibility
The postholder is required to carry out under the reasonable direction of the Head Teacher, the professional duties of a teacher which are set out in the relevant paragraphs of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and any subsequent amendments. The postholder must at all times carry out her/his responsibilities with due regard to the School’s policies including the Equal Opportunities Policy.
School teachers are required to carry out the duties set out in the Teachers Pay and Conditions document.
The job description reflects the national teacher standards for qualified teacher status. It may be amended at any appropriate time, following consultation between the head teacher and teacher, and will be reviewed annually. Priorities relating for performance managements objectives will be identified in the performance management documentation.

This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent and spoken English is an essential requirement of the role.

This post is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Appointment to this post is subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure which confirms the appointee is not on the Children’s Barred list being obtained. If you are shortlisted you will be asked to disclose any convictions, cautions, reprimands or final warnings that are not "protected" as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013)
Who are we looking for?
Castle Wood is a special school in Coventry welcoming children with a diverse range of different learning needs. Being a broad-spectrum school, we welcome candidates who are good problem solvers and able to think “outside the box” when it comes to supporting our pupil’s complex learning needs.
The ideal candidates will be resilient and able to accept that there will be challenges on a daily basis but that these can be overcome with resilience and a can-do approach. Additionally, candidates will need to accept that Castle Wood children do not always make progress in the same way and therefore small steps must be celebrated by student and teacher alike.

In return, you will get to work with the most wonderful children and make a real impact on their lives. You will have a well-resourced classroom including the provision of multiple teaching assistants to support you and an extremely supportive senior leadership team. Much of your planning will be in place and there is very limited (if any) book marking requirements meaning you can focus on ensuring the children have the best experiences.
We are on a journey of improvement and I can say – from personal experience- that helping to improve a school is the most rewarding experience for a teacher and a once in a career opportunity!
