Clean Water Process Engineer

We are currently seeking an experienced Clean Water Process Engineer to join our engineering team and support the delivery of major clean water treatment and infrastructure projects for UK water utility clients.

This is a senior technical position suited to an experienced process engineer with a strong background in clean water treatment, process design and the UK water industry. You will lead process engineering activities from feasibility and concept design through to FEED and detailed design, providing technical leadership and working closely with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, compliant and cost-effective solutions.

The role offers the opportunity to work on long-term projects within the UK water sector, with exposure to technically challenging programmes and major water utility clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of clean water process designs across a range of water infrastructure projects.
  • Produce and review process engineering deliverables from feasibility, concept design and FEED through to detailed design.
  • Develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, process calculations, mass balances and technical specifications.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to process engineers and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Act as a key technical contact for clients on clean water process design matters.
  • Ensure designs comply with UK water industry standards, client specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, hazard workshops and value engineering exercises.
  • Present technical findings, recommendations and design solutions to clients and project stakeholders.
  • Work with project teams to support programme delivery, budgets and key project milestones.
  • Collaborate with civil, mechanical, electrical and ICA disciplines to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
  • Support bids, tenders, proposals and business development activities where required.
  • Promote engineering best practice, innovation and continuous improvement.

Essential Experience

  • 10+ years' experience in clean water process engineering and design.
  • Proven experience delivering front-end, concept and detailed design for UK water companies.
  • Strong technical knowledge of clean water treatment processes and relevant design standards.
  • Experience leading process design activities and mentoring or supervising other engineers.
  • Experience managing engineering deliverables, programmes and project requirements.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to present technical information to clients.
  • Good understanding of UK water industry standards, legislation and treatment requirements.
  • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Qualifications & Desirable Experience

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IChemE, IET, CIWEM or another relevant professional institution.
  • Previous experience working with South East Water or other UK water utility companies.
  • Knowledge of process modelling and digital engineering tools.
  • Experience working across major water treatment or infrastructure programmes.

About You

We are looking for a technically strong and commercially aware engineer who can take ownership of process design activities and provide effective technical leadership. You should be confident working directly with clients, able to communicate complex technical information clearly and comfortable working across multidisciplinary project teams. The successful candidate will be organised, proactive and solution-focused, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of engineering delivery.

Location & Working

The role offers flexible working, with regular travel to client offices and project locations as required.

Travel will be particularly required to South East Water's offices in Snodland, Kent, along with other UK project and client locations.

This is a long-term contract opportunity supporting major clean water infrastructure programmes within the UK water sector.
