Cleaning Operative

Location: HMP Guys Marsh, Shaftesbury, SP7 0AH
Salary: £27,276.60 per annum
Contract: Temporary, full time, 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday

We are looking for a reliable and hardworking Cleaning Operative to join our team at HMP Guys Marsh, a Category C adult male prison. As part of our Facilities Maintenance team, you'll play an important role in helping to maintain a safe, clean and welcoming environment across the site. Working alongside skilled colleagues including Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, Administrators, and other Facilities professionals, you'll contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the establishment.

HMP Guys Marsh operates much like a self-contained town, requiring a wide range of people and services to keep everything running effectively. Every member of the team plays a vital role in supporting the prison's safe and secure operation, and the work you do will have a positive impact on staff, visitors, and those in our care.

Working across a range of communal and support areas, you'll take pride in creating clean, welcoming environments where people can work safely and effectively every day.

  • Using cleaning equipment safely and effectively, including vacuums and floor cleaning machinery.
  • Removing waste and helping maintain clean and tidy external areas.
  • Following health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and site policies.
  • Inspecting cleaning equipment before and after use, reporting any faults or maintenance requirements.
  • Supporting stock checks and helping maintain cleaning supplies and materials.
  • Completing basic records, including cleaning logs, materials usage, and timesheets.
  • Assisting with urgent or ad-hoc cleaning tasks as required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
